And yet in the age of specialization, where numerous football teams sub out a player or multiple players on a habitual basis. Why doesn't every team use your proposed solution for easy success?

Actually most GOOD teams do. They have a solid all around OLB as the starter. And then they have the young specialist that rotates in as the BACKUP who is being groomed to maybe one day be the starter. Sorry I just dont see Smith as the all around starter yet. And if the team publically saying they want to bring Gallette back is any indication, apparently our GM doesnt yet see Smith as that guy yet either.

As i said in another post. If they really thought Smith was the man, no need to want to bring Gallette back. Because I seriously doubt he comes back to DC to be a backup.

You don't typically see any of them dropping into coverage...they typically will fill a zone.

And we rarely saw Smith do that.

But lets put it this way. If the TEAM really thought Smith was all that, why even pursue Gallette at this point?? You dont try and sign a starter if you already have one. It would be a waste of cap space, a roster spot, and likely do more harm than good if Gallette is the devil some seem to think he is correct??

You sign the best football players you can at reasonable prices.

Agreed, but you DONT go out and sign guys you dont need correct?? From the vibe Im getting we have three camps

1. We dont Need Gallette because we have Smith who had eight sacks

2. The philosophically judgmental..... we dont want Gillette because he beats women. ( debatable in my book because while i dont condone hitting women in most cases, if she is woman enough to swing on a dude 1st, she best be man enough to take it should he defend himself)

3. The philosophically tightwadish.. who wouldnt mind having him back as long as he is willing to sign a contract on the cheap.

And yes the three do cross blend.

But even if its about signing the best players, for those that think we could get along fine with Smith... why on earth would Gallette take a low rent backup job as a prove it deal??

I am in camps 1 and 3. I would pay him if he wasn't a bitch slap away from a multi-game suspension and he wasn't coming off an Achilles tear. I don't think we necessarily need him because I think PS will be better than him.

The only reason camp 2 comes into play for me is the suspension that would come with another slip up.

He has had two supposed slip ups off the field. IN the same situation, if attacked by any one, would you not defend yourself?? I think Goddell is falling victim to the PC police entirely too much. But I have asked before what do we really know??

Incident one, he had to remove some chick from HIS house when he asked/told her to leave and she refused. Case dropped because they actually found that he did nothing wrong aside from not calling the police to have her removed.

Incident two, assuming it is actually him (not proven), he is attacked first by a male, then by two females.. he defends himself with a belt. Smart actually since if it was him and he struck her with his hand it could have gotten ugly quick. But again, thats like rushing at a cornered animal, can you blame it for defending itself??

As for the issue the Saints had with him, I chalk that up to buyers remorse. They wanted him to be a team leader for the amount they paid him. I get that. But some times you simply pay a guy for his play on the field and leave the leading of men to some one more qualified for the job.

And lastly, if the team had as much faith in Smith as you apparently do... again there is ZERO need for Gallette. You dont sign a starter if you already have on. Thats like buying a sports car when you already have the family sedan, and not driving the sports car you are actually making payments on. Even the tightwads among us can see that there is zero logic in it.

2 questions

How do you know Galette is a speed rusher?

You're sounding a little prisoner of the moment. All the praise for Miller and his pass rushing abilities. I thought the only way to Super Bowl glory was a franchise type, super-stud QB? What happened?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Far as Galette goes. I don't blame him for asking for big money. That's how negotiations are supposed to go. Someone starts high, someone else starts low and they work their way from there. In the past though had Galette asked for 7 to 9 million, The Skins would've given him 12 million with 7 guaranteed. Scotty Mac is here now though boys and this, negotiations, weighing risk/reward being prudent, is what he does. I think they Scotty Mac/Junior get something worked out that everyone can live with. The real test will be next year if Galette blows up like so many seem to think he's capable of.

I've seen clips of Gallette, he's quicker and more explosive than anyone we have. And this isn't a new wish, I was harping on a speed rusher for months leading up to the draft, of course assuming Williams would be off the board, because they are hard to come by and can totally change a defense. A franchise QB is still more important but we aren't talking QB. We have all seen what a great edge rusher can do and it didn't become obvious a few weeks ago, it was obvious when LT played and before,

I agree we let him walk at that price. But you folks are discounting just what a loss this would be. Again see the Super Bowl, Smith and Murphy simply do not have the edge speed and Gallette does.
How can his loss be discounted when we don't really know what he can do. He is coming off a devastating injury. He is one swing at a girlfriend away from a league ban. Smith may very well provide the same pressure, or damn near, as Gallette. He is not the next Vaughn Miller. Let him blow a bit in the wind. Turn the negotiation focus on other players and tell him when he gets serious, give the FO a call. Otherwise, the team will plan accordingly.

I never claimed Gallete was Von Miller and he sure isn't asking to be paid like him. But he does have a skill that is vital to a defense and you can never have enough pass rushers. The injury recovery issue is a fair point but let's not forget he wasn't hurt in January, he was hurt on the first day of camp in July. I assume the team will work him out before any deal is signed. As for the girlfriend again there are coinflicting reports, we don't really know what happened. One thing we do know is he knows what's at stake should he hit another woman. I'll take that chance.

I just think posters are dismissing a really good player based on the first numbers thrown out in a negotiation which pretty much mean nothing. See Bradford, Sam.

I don't hold the slip ups against him for the slip ups themselves. He put himself in these situations and he may still put himself in bad situations. He wasn't a game changer before the injury and he won't be after the injury.

As for signing Galette, you sign him in case you are wrong if the price is cheap enough because PS is on his rookie contract and is very cheap. I would give Galette 3 million on a prove it deal but he hasn't earned more.

I'm not against signing him, just concerned what we are really getting. If I'm not mistaken, he hasn't played any meaningful football in almost 2years. He might be a double digit sack guy still, but he may not be anymore. I think we are on the same page, tho.

Yep. The Redskins get to see him all the time so they should have somewhat of an idea of how he is recovering from the injury. Hopefully he is OK & they meet somewhere in the middle in terms of a contract.

Unfortunately, an Achilles tear takes 9-14 months to heal so they will not get a chance to really evaluate him before they sign him. But neither will anyone else. Since he will be a FA as of March 9th, he will no longer have access to team facilities (including trainers and rehab equipment).

So wait, he put himself in these situations?? OK granted the first incident... avoidable by actually knowing the types of people that come to your house.

But the second was on a public beach. So in order to avoid putting himself in situations like this, he should NEVER go out in public??

And how is a guy that averaged 11 sacks a season for his last two years of playing time NOT a game changer exactly??

And hell Im proud of you, at least you give the man SOME credit by saying $3 million. Not long ago you would have said Vet Minimum prove it deal. Baby steps. :D

He played 16 games in 2014 and had 10 sacks. He missed last year due to the injury he got in training camp for us. Not sure where the two years thing is coming from.

I thought I read somewhere that he didn't play much in 2014 as he was in the doghouse in NO. My bad.

I think the situation in NO was a bit blown out of proportion and he was partially a victim of the Saints trying to show they were going to play the good cop after the whole bounty gate thing. They wanted Gallette to take on the team leader role. He didnt which rubbed some people the wrong way. Add in the all new personal conduct police policies, and you have a good reason to let a guy walk. Also lets not overly discount the cap implications of letting Gallette walk. I know they took a $16 million cap hit spread over last year and this coming year. But he was also set to make upwards of $10 million this year. The saints were going to be over the cap by almost $12 million this year had they kept him around.

Exactly...all the new personal conduct policies reduce his value. He has had too many problems to treat like a saint...forgive the pun.

10 sacks for two years doesn't make you a game changer...teams do not fear Galette. They do not game plan for Galette.
