Hey Gayle Sayers got in - TD had every bit the career Sayers had.

The problem is that voters of that time are not the voters of today. The old voters pretty much if a player did something extraordinary even if just for a few years they would get in. Today they actually view longevity as much more important than that of being the best for a while. I mean look at Jerome Bettis getting in. I mean this is a guy that averaged under 4 yards per carry for his career. He only had 1 season over 1500 yards. Heck playoffs wise he averaged 48 yards per game. He had a 13 year career though to rack up plenty of yards and touchdowns. Like I said they have changed what matters. To me if a player for a 3-year period is the very best at what he does and is actually voted the best player in the entire league and shows up huge in the playoffs like they have never seen before then they definitely deserve to be in.
I agree. They let a lot of compilers in these days. I think it's going to bite them in the ass in the next 10 years or so. Especially at WR, where there are a lot of deserving guys getting bumped back because of the log jam at the position. But you look at some of the guys who are in and say, well, if Art Monk is in, then so should this guy or that guy. I was shocked at how quickly Bettis and Curtis Martin got in.
Curtis Martin I honestly understand a bit more than Bettis. He didn't quite have the longevity but he had 10 straight years of a 1,000 yards or more. Heck his best season of his career was the 2nd last year of his career with 1697 yards and a 4.6 yards per carry average. He also did decent in the playoffs averaging close to 80 yards a game. Bettis is the one that seems to have gotten in more for his lovable personality than his play on the field. I mean he did decent on the field don't get me wrong but never did I think "this guy is one of the 3 best RB's in the entire league."
And yeah I agree they are getting quite the log jam going on. I'm thinking they need to have a year where they get away from the only letting 5 guys in at a time. We have more teams now than back in the 70's meaning more players putting up good to great stats.
I was actually going to say the same exact thing. He is a media darling and that whole winning a 'ship in his hometown thing they did throughout that whole Super Bowl run thing really cemented his early entry.
I agree about Martin and would take him in way before Bettis. But when he retired, I had a conversation with a buddy that I often discuss HOFers with and we were both on the fence about him and Bettis (and he is a HUGE Steelers fan). When he (Martin) actually came up, the media acted like it was a no-brainer. That's the main reason I brought his name up.
I (and my buddy agrees) would take TD over both those guys any day of the week, twice on Sundays, and about 5 times on Super Bowl Sunday.
Yeah I am more in the line of if a player for at least a 3-year period was the undeniable best player at his position and showed up huge in the biggest games of the year then I would take that player over somebody who barely finished top-10 for their position but did it over 13 years. To me HOF means the best of the best and like I said at no point in Bettis' career did I think of him as the best or even top-3. He had one season I maybe would have thought about it but when you have to question whether a player was one of the best during his era at his position then they shouldn't be in. There is no question that Davis was the best RB for a 3-year period. There is no question that he showed up in the playoffs like we have never seen in this league. Anyway seems like we are in agreement on this. I am with you on that Martin wasn't a sure fire HOF player for me either but I like his argument much better than Bettis' of why he deserves to be in.
The news is an hour old by now, but as expected TD did not get in.
Both TD and John Lynch made it to the top ten which supposedly is a good sign going forward.
MHR had an interesting stat tonight teams with 5 or more SB appearances before 2000 and number of HOF inductees:
Pittsburgh - 21
Dallas - 15
San Fran - 14
Denver - 4
Do you think besides being Denver 2-5 so far in sb's factor in their reasoning?
