If healthy, this could be one special defense this year.

As much as I have loved up McCray since the day we signed him I think he is in very serious jeopardy this year with some of these LB's developing fairly quicker.

Btw, I always noticed that too with Moore. He played some real deep S.

This defense will wreck more havoc - make more big plays - and give up more big plays. In today's NFL it is not about stopping the offense - because the league has given the rule edge to the offensive teams - so JDR's defense was good, but give me a defense like I think Wade Phillips will put out there - this defense will stop more drives and give the Bronco offense more opportunities. The new Dline coach - looks to be paying off big time.

I think the bottom line is that the players seem enthused about Wade's ideas and plans - for the most part because it is a much better fit for our personnel

TJ Ward will be used properly this season, and be the cause of a lot of confusion and rushed throws by opposing offenses

I feel like we have a little less to lose this year as people aren't really expecting a SB victory as much as the past two seasons. Not that anyone would be shocked but I think we might feel a little less pressure. (Peyton says easy for you to say)

I think a key will be that Peyton Manning will not have to be the guy with all the pressure to win games - at his age and his football IQ making him a game manager in a run first offense with an attacking defense makes sense and he should benefit (if he doesn't get killed by the rookies on the oline ;) ).

To me Phillips really does fit this group well. His big thing is let the players do what they do best. He will design an entire defense around the type of players he has and what they can do instead of trying to make those players fit within his scheme. I mean we are already seeing with Von Miller the type of year he can have. I loved the aggressive play of even our back up Corners in the game on Saturday where they just seemed fired up that they were being trusted to play that tight man coverage. Our linebackers were allowed to just attack and it all showed. I mean I think by half time we had given up something like 27 yards of total offense or something. Wilson dropped back to pass 4 times and was sacked on 2 of those attempts.

A game manager with the ability to shred almost any secondary should the need arise ;-)

Still having a difficult seeing him with his lack of mobility trying to run the west coast stretch zone running scheme. That is all Kubiak knows. That is what they were running in the first preseason. It is the offense that gives this team or any other team the best chance to win it.

In order for the stretch run to work, bootleg play action is essential. Run action to the left, bootleg to the right. It is a constant play call and it is imperative that the threat is there in order to hold off back side pursuit. Once that is honored, it gives the RB at least two options assuming the blocking is going well up front.

It is the staple for the west coast offense. It is the bread and butter of everything Kubiak has been. We know it all too well.

Watch. See the play action of Elway and how essential it is. Every run is a bootleg play action.

You are right going to have to wait and see how Manning does with some of it. I have heard though he has looked very good running it by both fans and media. Heck I actually went to practice and watched Manning run it and honestly he looked better than I have ever seen him. HE was on the run making passes right between the numbers every time. He made one mistake while I was there around the goal line where I think Darian Stewart jumped in front of one of his passes but beyond that he was sharp. Like I said they had him doing a bunch of roll out drills and again his passes were spot on. Now this is without anybody having the chance to hit him so we shall see once the games actually matter but I like the promise of what I have seen and heard.

I agree it is difficult to see - since we haven't yet seen it. In the offense practice at training camp - it has a combined Peyton Manning offense with the Kubiak offense - I suspect the bootleg will be run less often with Manning - rather than more often, but Manning - in his typical fashion - has worked to get his body ready for the bootleg.

Something else to remember though is the Ravens last year ran the bootleg play only 8 times during the regular season. They still had one of the most efficient offenses in the league with barely running the play we are speaking about here. You can still play action out of this offense without having to run the full bootleg play and still have great success.

Finally, we are seeing Von Miller in his natural position as a 3-4 OLB. It is about damn time. I know it is only preseason, but it really looks like they are going to get great pressure on the QB.

Combine that with Malik on the line, along with Ware and Shane Ray (not to mention when Wolfe finishes his suspension) it could be a special year.

I love the new offense, which is the same as the old offense. Osweiler was impressive. Good attitude and Latimer seems to be quite comfortable with the scheme too.

Now, can someone please do something about the special teams? I am concerned that that is going to be a problem all year. Hope not.

Certainly looking it so far. I agree with the personnel and the 3-4.

Agreed. Throw Shaq Barrett on the LB pile too!

He made a showing on Sunday. The defense right now is looking very deep. It is the best defense since the orange crush days.

This years Broncos remind me very much of the 1984 team. If you or anyone is old enough to remember that team. Hey set sack record that year with 57 (looks like this defense will break that one) and that was the year of the infamous "mile high magic."

Remember that Monday night game against the packers where the first two plays of the game were defensive fumble returns for TDs. There was a game against the Pats were most tatupu fumbled e ball as they were getting not fg range for the win and Dennis smith returned it for a TD.

This year is very much reminding me of that year so far.

This team gets 3 and outs. The Orange Crush teams got a lot of turnovers and sacks and were opportunistic but they were not good in 3 and outs. I would think they prob ranked at the bottom in that category during those yrs. This team is much better esp in getting off the field.

Agreed but I'd like to see how they do against the Packers, Patriots, and Bengals before I compare this team with the Orange Crush defense. They haven't played any team with a good offense quite yet. The talent is there though to be one of the best Broncos defenses but I still want more proof.

All of that is true. It is just the feeling we are getting. The defense bailing out the offense constantly. I have a feeling it is going to be this way all year.

Hopefully Mannng gets all of the passing records that he is targeting and retires after this year.

Based on his press conference after the game, he seems to be quite lost mentally. Anyone get that feeling? Did anyone get a chance to see it? It was strange to say the least to me.

Pretty sure this defense is the first time a Bronco defense finished first in the NFL. Yes, I do think switching to the 3-4 with this personnel was the best move.

And hiring Phillips. I know Elway, even more after this season, will do everything within his power to keep this D together. Rather see him make some sacrifices on O side of ball.
