Looking For A Center? Alex Mack Might Be Available: May Opt Out Because 'Winning Is Important To Me'

Alex Mack on potentially opting out: Winning is important to me

If we're looking for a center on the FA market next year, Alex Mack might be available. He's been a Probowl talent for most of his career, and his contract has on opt out clause this year he may want to exercise. He'd definitely resolve issues on the weakest link on our o-line, but he'll want to get paid, he's 30 years old, and he's coming off a leg injury.

Still, for the right price (if he decides to opt out), he could fill a hole at center for the next three or so years. Having said that, this is not what McCloughan normally wants to do and a center can be had in later rounds of the draft on the cheap. I'll venture a guess that Scotty will steer clear of Mack given his age, price and injury history and look to the draft to further develop home grown talent on our o-line. But it's still worth flagging this option nonetheless. After all, if Mack cares about winning, we fit that bill, don't we?

And believe it or not, our o-line, in its current form, consists entirely of draft choices and its oldest player is 27 (Trent Williams).

I was just about to post this. We have the money this year even after KC contract. All we need on offense would be a RB and that side of the ball is done. The draft can focus on defense

we do still need to find a well rounded blocking TE to compete with Niles and Logan

Center is without a doubt our biggest problem. It's a wonder this offense functions at all with this situation. Oh Hell yes on this idea.

An upgrade at center would be nice but we are hurting at TE right now. I agree with Cali. Some of these things might take of themselves with health players returning.

A blocking TE will be easy to find in FA or late in the draft. Paul is going to be on this team next year Cali.

That wasn't exactly how it played out for us this year. Wasn't easy at all to find that TE...

And keep in mind how many OTHER teams are looking for that too.

Love Niles, he has yet to prove himself a consistent tough blocking guy. He's improved and added weight but competition will only improve that spot for us.

Our future TE might already be on the team in Darrel Young. He has the size and he's already the team's best skill position blocker plus he has decent enough hands.

I read an article that listed Cleveland as one of 5 teams that make sense for Griffin to possibly land. If Cleveland has interest, a straight up trade, Mack for Griffin makes sense.

That would be a great trade, if we could pull it off. Mack's contract runs into 2018 with consecutive cap numbers of $8M. But there's no guaranteed money or unamortized pro-rated amounts which makes this a very cap-friendly contract. This would probably mean we'd cut Lichtensteiger, which would clear $3M in space, thus meaning we'd only add a net $5M to our cap next year.

Of course, Cleveland would need for Griffin to do something with that option. If he doesn't, that makes him untradeable.

I would love for Mack to come here. With his addition the line would be brutal on opposing defenses!

Nobody is trading for Griffin and that contract, they will simply wait for him to get cut and work out a much cheaper deal.

mack is a stop gap solution . but we need to consider is how close are we to being a perennial contender . lets take the blinders off and see what we are . a 500 team with some holes to fill . you sign a mack if you are making the run . i am not sure we are quite there yet

I agree. Mack has been a good player. "Has" is the important word. He is winding his career down. Injuries are becoming common. We would be better served spending our resources on a young player that we can develop who will be peaking when the rest of the team will be peaking and be prepared to make a run.

This team can make a run this year. Seattle would be very beatable at home in the playoffs. If MAck was on this team right now we would have a top 5 o line in the league. Why not go after Mack? If the money is not too crazy. Give KC more time to throw to Jax, Garcon, and Reed. Nothing wrong with that. plus the running game would improve dramatically.

cali, I meant a whole offseason to find a blocking TE. Its a lot tougher to do it late in the season.

We can beat Seattle not scared of there offense weapons at all. Plus their defense is not even close to what is was last year. RW is putting up big numbers but they are playing some bad teams. I rather play Seattle than Minn.

We shouldn't discourage dean from being our supreme optimist too much. We have country and Coach to take care of the Debby Downer roll. :D

I don't think it a good idea to hope for Seattle here at home. If memory serves me right, in the last playoff game against them we had a QB rising who began his descent in DC against them. Facing that possibility again would be too much for the fans of this team to bear unless............Kirk.............Naw!!

My thoughts exactly.

A bit off topic but not worth it's own thread: anyone else not buying that it's a coincidence that our run defense improved dramatically once Riley and Robinson were replaced due to injury?
