It was a joke, meatball. Sorry I hurt your feelings.

Also, "thereof" is one word.

Jokes should have some merit though champ.

Like if I said "Slinky has about a dozen posts showing his obsession of Eugene mullet" then proceeded to crack a joke. It could be a decent joke. But also a blatant lie to force in my humor.

Just saying...you don't have to lie to kick it.

No worries, nothing personal taken and you make valid points. For my part, this is my favorite show and it probably makes me a lot harder on it. I still think it is sacrificing quality for the sake of pandering to the masses...or selling out, to be honest.

And guess what? I feel the same way about ol' Gordon. Money rules, Baby. ;)

Yeah, fair enough. I guess I'd wonder why you'd expect a show on basic cable to be anything other than 'pandering' though. Given that it is on basic cable, the show seems remarkably dark and chance-taking to be honest.

I think shows like Grimm, Elementary, TWD all manage to be decent quality given their oversight by guys in suits and advertisers. Most of the real quality shows tend to live on pay channels though. Their writers just aren't handcuffed as much.

Thing is, this isn't just any show. It's a show that has set ratings records that any of the networks would die to have. And it did this within the first 2 to 3 years when the quality was of the highest standards. As soon as they fired Frank Darabont as showrunner and began to cut costs, the show slowly began its descent imo. In everything except ratings, that is. I think they have climbed even higher. If that's the bottom line, then I can't argue with success. Just sayin', that quality ain't there anymore.

As to the networks: if I can, I'll post this article I read awhile back where Kirkman talks about his negotiations with NBC and the changes they wanted to make if they picked up his show. Something along the lines of "Well, we can't show the zombies actually biting people! And we'll have to minimize the blood." Pretty funny stuff.

Oh, I got no problem at all with saying that the show suffered a bit when Darabont left. There's plenty of stuff that they get wrong. I had a looooong drawn out discussion on another board about the scene where they went off the freeway with the white van, and why the continuity sucked (lack of budget to re-shoot).

At any rate, the prevailing thrust of the discussion was that that scene sucked because the show sucked, the writers sucked, and they were all a bunch of lazy entitled bastards.

My pointing out the realities of budgets and re-shoots wasn't appreciated. :)

Ha, I forgot you were in the biz. Point taken on the last part. But you know damn well NBC is kicking its collective self for passing. That said, what a disaster that would've been. ;)

So just to be clear, 'A character I don't like = A character nobody likes?'

Nobody likes Ndomukong Suh....

....But I'll bet there are some who do.

C'mon chf, get the stick out of your ass already, or do we have to crank it up again?

This show really brings out the angst in viewers. Which is fine of course. What drives me nuts are people who AAAAARGH about how crappy the show is, and yet are up on the tiniest minutia, and will obviously be watching until the bitter end. There's a REASON you're still watching.

A show that's truly given up and is mailing it in? Like True Blood in the last few seasons? Nobody says boo, because why would you bother? You can't get the energy up to give a shvt.

People certainly do get the energy up for TWD.

To me that means that it's still a good show.

Characters people hate are, of course, part of it being a good show.

You're not supposed to like all the characters.

/rant. :)

Oh, and the above is a generic rant directed at the overall thread, not you specifically Chef.

Kind of ironic with your Avatar actually. I wouldn't piss on that guy if he was on fire, and yet he makes GREAT TV. Me hating him is him making great TV (even though I don't watch)

True or False: Battlestar Galactica began to suffer near the end of the series?

True or False: You still watched.

Bottom line is (And AGAIN I know I'm not telling you something you don't already know) people invest time in shows and TV viewership doesn't always listen to the economics of sunk expenditures... People have watched over 5 seasons of TWD, so they're supposed to walk away because there's a few episodes that they thought sucked? Or because they might have figured a better way things could have gone that might have made it more interesting to the majority (because God knows if I say "everyone" you'll burst another blood vessel)?

And with characters you aren't supposed to like? The reference isn't to mean or evil characters, but more ones that become trifling and you wonder what the purpose of them even being in the show are... Like for MY part. I sincerely doubt the writers set out saying, "Let's make Carl an annoying character that will be like the finger nails on the chalkboard of our series!"... Yet, there he is! (Again, IMO)...

Now I know you aren't referring to me when you speak of people who say the show really has gone downhill, because I never said such a thing, so I'll let those who have defend themselves from here, but...

The football hyperbole that occurs on this board is PERFECT for this discussion. We can admit that Suh is a horrible human being, without having to gild the lilly and say that he's without talent, or a horrible football player.

See: Any thread about Brady in here.

If you aren't AAARGHING about how the show sucks Donkey balls (ie: Brady can't walk and chew gum at the same time, and any high school QB could do better), then I won't say a peep.

And BG couldn't figure out how to end it. They didn't start 'mailing it in', or whatever other hyperbole that I'm sure some fans typed or said.

:)

You have me at a disadvantage there... Just don't hit the NFL boards much, but I can certainly believe what you say there.

Gotcha. I love the show, personally. There are times where I certainly question it, or disapprove of a character or plot "twist" or what have you... I almost feel like the Carl/Ron/Enid arc is pandering to teen viewers. No, strike that... I'm almost positive that that us what that arc is, but it's so blatantly obvious that it's almost painfully uncomfortable to watch. (Not sure if I'm making sense there.)

Overall, it's a small % of the show. It COULD be much worse, it could be on the WB, and angsty teens could be the whole show, with adults only as foils for them to angst against. (The 100 etc etc etc)

I'd argue that life seen through younger characters eyes is pretty central, since that's the whole hook of the show, should any of them bother hoping for a future.

At the same time, having a bit of teen-aged drama is realistic. Carl IS a teen-ager. Wouldnt he get a chubby if there is a girl roughly his age in his basic proximity? And wouldnt Ron get bent out of shape if this bad-ass survivor comes in and take his girl?

The story-line may be annoying to adults, but that is more because teen-agers are annoying to adults. Not because the story-line is not realistic.

Enid's eating the business-side of a tortoise, while Sam is whining about walnuts in his cookie.
