I think we can all agree that we love Kobe for what he has done for the Lakers throughout his career. I think we all pretty much agree too, that he has earned the right to go out how he see's fit. I think we all can also agree that Kobe shooting so much and still having the offense go through him isn't working and isn't helping the young guys develop.
Tom Tolbert made a good point on Cowherd yesterday when he said that, at this point in their careers, the young guys aren't going to stand up to Kobe. If Kobe wants to shoot, they are going to give him the ball and get out of his way. It doesn't matter what Byron or anyone else says, it's what's going to happen. That's just how it works in the NBA.
Having said all of that, perhaps the best thing for the Lakers at this point, would be for Kobe to continue shooting as badly as he has for the rest of the season. He is currently shooting 31%. Kobe is a lot of things, he's arrogant, confident to the point of delusion and can be pretty selfish at times. What he isn't, however, is stupid. If this continues, he will figure out that his career is over. That should result in him finally hanging them up at the end of the season.
If he were shooting in the 40%'s and the Lakers were hovering around .500, he'd likely be in Jim Buss's office as we speak, wanting an 1 year extension. Perhaps the best thing at this point, is to let him do what he's gonna do, make the last few home games of the season, celebrations of his career and let him (force him?) to ride off into the sunset and go play in Italy or that new "seniors league" thing that someone posted about a little while back.
Then, with the shadow of Kobe finally off of this team, they can move forward, develop the kids, land a big time FA or 2 and get back to being a good team.
