OK in case you havent noticed, I have taken to not posting about the game for atleast 24 hours after a loss. Just makes things easier.

NOw that we are past the 24 hour mark, here goes on my take from yesterdays games.

Positives... I know there wont be many from a game we lost and were expected to lose.

1. Cousins does seem to be slowly progressing. Aside from a tip drill tossed up by Garcon, his habit of throwing picks seems to be diminishing. He also had quite a few on target balls dropped yesterday as well. Kirk is showing improvement in the areas we most needed to see improvement. It didnt result in a win, but he also didnt throw the soul crushing pick that most of us have come to fear, and many more have come to expect.

2. Secondary depth... Again we lost. But aside from Gronk getting his touches, against Brady they did alot better than most of us expected despite the secondary being some what in flux at the moment. Saying you will shut down Gronk is kinda like saying Tokyo has a snow balls chance in hell of a real estate boom after a Godzilla sighting. He is just as much of an unstoppable force, you can only hope to limit the damage, at some point he will stomp your shit.

3. Team mentality... every one on earth expected us to lose this game.. and get handily blown out. And aside from the late TD, we basically did get blown out. But I never saw this team quite yesterday. We got out talented, and to a degree out muscled, but I didnt see the look of a team that quite.

Negatives....

1. Cousins and the rifle throw. While I think his accuracy is improving, his touch on the ball was at least a part of the reason for the high number of drops. I think he is gunning the ball far too often. Now part of this is trying to fit it into a space.. but also some of it is just a lack of touch on the ball. This is something I will be watching over the rest of the season. If its an accurate, yet un-catchable ball, whats the point. Yes WR's need to make a play from time to time, but a wide open pass thats dropped because it comes in too hot and a little too high is shared responsibility between the QB and the WR.

2. Cousins and his comfort level with the WR's. This is one that just irks the hell out of me because its more a symptom of the team agenda going into the off season than anything else. The fact that Cousins has more faith in our most drop prone WR (Roberts), and the fact that he doesnt have timing down with our starting WRs (Jackson, Garcon, Grant), literally has me screaming at the set every Sunday. He lacks timing with and trust in these guys. It might take until next season for him to get to the comfort level that he has with butterfingers. This will continue to haunt this team for the rest of the season.

3. Poor tackling and bad angles. We continue to see both these demons rear their ugly heads on a week in and week out basis. I think this is more a result of coaching or lack there of than a lack of talent at this point. This is another thing I expect to continue to haunt us, and a prime culprit as to why we struggle to stop the run at this point in the season.

4. The run game.... Again I think this is more agenda driven than talent. Seems some one is dead set on making Jones the feature back in this offense. Between play calling and play distribution, we are dead set on letting AM walk at the end of the season. Kinda sucks since this also has an effect on TOP and we end up becoming the type of team we said we didnt want to be.... Pass heavy and playing from behind.

Neutrals...

1. I think Gruden has done enough thus far to keep his job.

2. I think Kirk is showing enough to keep us out of the QB derby for at least next off season.

3. If we could get the corners all healthy, I think we atleast have a passable pass defense.

4. A WR or two taller than Bilbo Baggins needs to be on the top of the list for off season needs. Even with every one healthy, we have no real domination presence in the WR group.

5. After WR, our second highest need should be an enforcer in the secondary. A safety with the range to cover, and the poundage to make a fool pay for actually catching the ball if he dare..... So fucking miss ST21 each and every Sunday still.

Well there you go, have at it.

Part of the reason for the success against the Pats passing game was due to the Pats running the ball well & not needing to pass that often. IMO - this week is a key test for the defense especially against the run. The Saints have only had one game where a rusher went for over 100 yds. If they give up 100 yds to Ingram they are doomed. They might set an NFL record for most rushing yds allowed in a season.

Time to dig down & do their jobs correctly. Forget the secondary - the D line & LBs have to do a much better job - at least against the run.

Those are cool Cali... but if you tell me you know who Robert Heinline and William C Dietz are..... I might have to marry you off to my oldest just based on coolness points alone.

Pretty bad showing considering we came out of a bye week with poor fundamentals in all areas. A lack of talent has always been my thinking but I am starting to think it's both. Make you think what did this team do during the bye week, spent the week on the beach.

The run defense is horrible, some blame it on the absence of Knighton but really it has been bad for the last 3 wks. New England I believe had a TE playing RT Tackle b/c of injuries and they still won easily.

Well there you go, have at it.

I finally saw the game via GamePass, today. I usually see the games live, but was out of town. Anyhow, I'm liking KC's improvement, game by game. John Lynch was actually praising him for the whole game, as he should've. He made some very good throws, which his first four were drops. However, he still showed good poise in the pocket and has continued to show that perhaps, he has a future with this team. That last drive, which he threw the TD to Jordan Reed to was very impressive. The other problem is we need a WR with some size. Alshon Jeffery will be a FA at the end of the season. I am a huge fan, since his Gamecock days and he is at the top of my list. He has size, deceptive speed, good hands, and can go get it. He had a pretty good game against us a few years back. Matt Jones had some good runs, but unfortunately he put the ball on the ground......., again. The

Defensively, we've got to stop the run, some how. Devonta Freeman, Chris Ivory, Doug Martin, and now, LaGarrette Blount has ran all over us. DT's just cannot seem to disengage blocks to stop runs at the line of scrimmage, consistently. Also, the missed tackles. Blount's long run should not have happened to that magnitude, but bad tackling was the culprit.

I put an asterisk by our secondary because the group has not been healthy. Breeland is a good CB. He's established that at this juncture. The jury's out on Chris Culliver because he's been hurt. D-Hall is getting old and has injuries. I believe he is overpaid at this point. I'm not sure if Deshon Goldson is the long-term answer at FS. Jalen Ramsey is a player, who I would love for us to draft at FS to help out the secondary, next year. I was impressed with the Jeron Johnson sighting in the game. Made some very good open-field tackles. He intrigues me at the SS position.

I do like the team's upside. The thing is, I believe this team is gonna get another makeover in the offseason. I am not sure that D-Jax, Pierre Garcon, nor Andre Roberts will be on the team, next year. Defensively, we've gotta get another LB to pair with K-Rob because Perry Riley is not getting it done. Our defensive front needs work as well.

Im not as convinced on Gruden and Cousins as you and I dont know about needing a big WR but a pretty fair assessment.

Gimme two options that wont set the team back another 3 years.. I am all ears.

As it sits right now, sticking with Gruden and Kirk is the teams best option. And Kirk has shown enough improvement so far to get resigned. Firing Gruden means starting over and likely looking for a new QB and another 3 year rebuild.

You got better options??

Youre probably right which is why Im not really opposed to them sticking around for another year. Im just lower on both of them than you.

I also dont buy that a new coach automatically means 3 more years.

QB is tougher, so it depends what wed be paying Kirk. He can stay but it better be cheap and (largely) non guaranteed. If there is another QB option made available to us Im all for us at least taking a look.

OK the question becomes... why are you lower on both of them?? Cousins has shown improvement. And the concept that we could find a better coach after firing Gruden is a reach to say the least.

Any coach worth a fuck is going to avoid us like the plague if we fire Gruden at the end of the year. As for QB's there isnt a rookie in this draft worth starting, and the FA market is likely to be retreads, or guys that are worse than Cousins.

As shark said, what choices do we have? With all those that are down on cousins, I've asked this question and I never get an answer. Also, it's readily apparent that KC is improving. This is what all inexperienced QBs go through. The good ones learn from their mistakes and improve over the course of a season or two.

As for Gruden, I'm not sold but I also recognize the shit storm he walked into last year. I almost have to give him a pass for last year. I concur with dad when he says that new coaches deserve a minimum of 3 years to prove themselves. Barring some unforeseen meltdown, Gruden deserves another year.

The fact that we COULD find a better coach is pretty much undeniable. Actually doing certainly isnt a guarantee but you cant score if you dont shoot. Granted Im not convinced we need to fire Gruden, Ill let ya know what I think at the end of the year.

As for Cousins hes been a bad QB for 99% of his career. (Sorry skinsdad I dont count being as good as Josh McCown as being average). He has shown flashes of good things throughout his career too but a lot of players do. To me hes a 4th year, 27 year old QB who hasnt been good when hes played. But as you said we dont have a ton of options. There arent really any FAs we can pin our hopes on. I havent read much on the QB class or watched much film on them so its tough to say but there may or may not be an answer there. I think we should explore it, I dont think we HAVE to draft a QB or replace Cousins. But its possible Goff is there or we end up liking somebody. To throw out the idea at this point seems silly to me.
