Injuries. Last week, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said receiver DeSean Jackson would return by the Tampa Bay game at the latest. That was before he tweaked his hamstring in practice Thursday. The Redskins will monitor him this week and hope that he can play Sunday. But, Gruden said, “It’s not a definite, no.” The Redskins also will monitor a handful of other injuries, including one to starting safety Trenton Robinson, who exited the stadium with a walking boot on his left foot for a sprained ankle. He’s day-to-day. The Redskins can’t afford more injuries, especially to a secondary already missing its two starting corners in Chris Culliver (knee) and DeAngelo Hall(toe).

There’s a big decision Redskins coach Jay Gruden will have to make at … cornerback. In non-quarterback news, Washington could soon have a healthy, pun intended, problem at cornerback. It’s still unknown when Chris Culliver and DeAngelo Hall will return, but it’s hard to believe that even Gruden thought he’d have five solid options at this position after releasing David Amerson during the third week of the season.

PFF can be tricky with their grades but I think we can all agree that Kirk had an awful day against the Jets.

That said, I personally don't believe any of the QBs on our roster would have Faired much better.

That's why I'm ok with riding the up and down train with Kirk... For now

The official 43-point third-quarter deficit is atrocious but actually the problem is worse than that.

If you count scores from drives that started in the third quarter but ended in the fourth, the Redskins have been outscored by an astonishing 78-3.

What’s the problem? For one thing, turnovers. In six games the Redskins have turned the ball over a total of 11 times this season. Of those, five have come in the third quarter. Doing the math, that’s about 45 percent of the giveaways in about 25 percent of the playing time.

And the opponents are taking maximum advantage of the Redskins’ generosity. They have scored touchdowns after each of the five third-quarter takeaways.

All year the Redskins’ opponents have scored 48 points off of turnovers and 35 of those came after third-quarter takeaways. Yeah, that’s bad.

But that isn’t the full extent of the problem. The Washington offense has still had 10 possessions during which they did not turn the ball over. They have mustered a field goal on those possessions. The other nine ended with one missed field goal and eight punts.

Pretty good summation from New beat reporter Craig Hoffman

The Quarterback Conundrum — www.espn980.com — Readability

Excerpt

Essentially the quarterback decision in DC is that decision you make where you don’t like any of the options. You pace around and you decide to go with one and then immediately hate yourself because you know the one you selected isn’t a great option. So you call off your decisions and circle again in your brain until you’re ready to decide again, and you’ll probably come back to that same answer because it’s the least of all the evils. It’s just not the least by that much, making it all the more excruciating.

Kirk Cousins, Robert Griffin III and Colt McCoy are all mediocre at best NFL quarterbacks. It’s a choice of how you like your mediocre and what direction it is trending.

The thought of going with Cousins was that version of mediocre would allow others to play well and grow and the arrow had the best chance of going up. Jay Gruden was brought in to coach Griffin because he was thought to be a quarterback friendly coach.

If Cousins plays like he did against the Jets again, it’ll be inarguable that the arrow has flipped and that’ll be two quarterbacks Gruden has failed to improve in his two years in Washington.

again asking this team to be competitive with an o/line that has a combined 14 starts vs the jets d/line is asking a lot . you just cant play an arena guy at LT and expect williams results

I agree with this point.

But there is most definitely some questions that can be asked from this game.

Questions about run defense, pass rush and the front 7 which is mostly healthy at minimum.

i just hope we get a win . i get tired of most people piling on after losses and then disappearing after wins

you wait if we get a win this KC stuff gets shelved for a week only to be brought back up vs the pats which we have no shot at winning but people will act like its the toronto argonauts

It is frustrating.

Mostly because everyone wants to see consistency and wins immediately.

And that simply doesn't happen after so many years of neglecting to build a football team the right way.

I see progress. I also see mistakes. That's going to exist. I remain optimistic personally.

There seems to be no middle ground for some. That too, is consistent with all fan bases.

I agree with most people in that you can’t pin 100% of the Jets loss on Cousins, but his turnover rate is beyond unacceptable. It would be acceptable if he was a rookie No. 1 pick quarterback, who was just learning (Peyton Manning circa 1998). This is his fourth year. This is what he is. … Does a loss to Tampa Bay end the Cousins era in D.C.? Worse than that, does a win extend his season and the slow death he’s putting Redskins fans through? It’s time for Colt!

– Rich Perillo, Tampa, Fla.

You never know with this team, because there are so many cooks in the kitchen. But if it’s up to Gruden, Cousins is his quarterback, win or lose.

JN2_61531445200990.jpgRedskins general manager Scot McCloughan, watching Sunday in New York, may be the help, or may have help, making Jay Gruden’s quarterback decision. (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)

If it’s a really ugly performance, however, Gruden could have that decision taken out of his hands by an angry, restless owner. However, if this is indeed a new era, then Gruden would get his wish. Scot McCloughan has talked about a need for patience and how this is a year-long evaluation/building process. So, if it’s up to him, I get the sense that the Redskins will indeed proceed as Gruden plans – riding with Cousins through thick and thin in hopes that over the course of the next six to eight games, the quarterback makes the decision easy for them by either working through what they believe are youth-related hurdles and playing well, or ruling himself out of the long-term consideration.

But that’s if McCloughan is permitted to do his job and call all of the shots. If Daniel Snyder can’t help himself and feels the need to step in, then things could change.
