Dynamic duos: Ranking CFB's top 10 defensive linemen tandems - NFL.com

10. UCLA: Eddie Vanderdoes and Kenny Clark
The skinny: Vanderdoes gets more notoriety for his time spent at fullback, but the defensive lineman is a multi-year starter and one of the toughest players to block because of his relentless motor and top-notch quickness. He teams with Clark, who really shined last year as a second-team All-Pac-12 performer and is equally adept at stopping the run as he is rushing the passer.

9. Auburn: Montravius Adams and Carl Lawson
The skinny: A mammoth presence in the middle of the defense from early in his career on the Plains, Adams is expected to make the jump from very good to great in 2015 after being one of Auburn's best defensive linemen last season. New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp must already be excited at building around Adams. His play should be enhanced by the return of Lawson, who missed last season with an ACL injury but showed he was a quality pass rusher as a true freshman.

8. Alabama: A'Shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed
The skinny: Robinson didn't have the stats of other defensive linemen on this list. But make no mistake: he's a beast in the middle of any defense. Few are able to shoot the gap as quickly as he does, and his strength is readily apparent to anybody who goes against him one-on-one. He teams up with Reed, who chose to return to the Crimson Tide for his senior season in order to continue to progress as one of the top linemen in the SEC. It says plenty about Nick Saban's defense that you could also consider a number of other individuals to team with Robinson for this list.

7. Louisville: Devonte Fields and Sheldon Rankins
The skinny: Fields is expected to be a starter for the Cardinals after clearing up a number of legal issues dating back to his time at TCU, where he was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman. His transfer will boost a defense that lost a number of quality pass rushers. It appears Fields regained some of his form from two seasons ago during his junior-college stop at Trinity Valley by recording 6.5 sacks in 2014. He'll team up with Rankins, who recorded eight sacks as a full-time starter for Louisville and seemed to cause offenses problems with his size.

6. Tennessee: Derek Barnett and Curt Maggitt
The skinny: All Barnett did as a true freshman for the Vols was rack up 10 sacks and set numerous Tennessee and SEC records as a relentless pass rusher. One of the biggest bright spots on a young team, he'll figure to see more double-teams in 2015 but seems qualified to handle them given his skill set and size. He teams up with Maggitt, who led the team in sacks last season. Barnett will show off his versatility by also playing linebacker in addition to defensive end depending on the situation.

5. Michigan State: Shilique Calhoun and Lawrence Thomas
The skinny: Calhoun didn't have his best year in 2014 but was still very, very productive: eight sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss. The second-team All-American returned to school for his senior season and figures to battle Ohio State's Joey Bosa for just about every defensive line award ... nationally. Calhoun has a tremendous teammate in Thomas, who moved around during his first few years in East Lansing but has turned into a monster as of late. His ability to play both inside and outside creates a matchup nightmare and his quickness should help improve his sack total even more.

4. Ole Miss: Robert Nkemdiche and Marquis Haynes
The skinny: The Land Sharks are in good hands despite some personnel losses from last year thanks to this pair of studs on the defensive line. Nkemdiche has lived up to his five-star billing as one of the best players in the SEC. He is still able to get to the quarterback despite often drawing a double-team. His versatility is a plus depending on the game situation, and fellow Rebels star Haynes burst onto the scene last season and shows no signs of stopping.

3. Virginia Tech: Dadi Nicolas and Ken Ekanem
The skinny: One reason the Hokies were able to knock off eventual champion Ohio State was the play of their top-notch defensive line. Nicolas racked up an impressive 18.5 tackles for loss to go with nine sacks and was a constant presence in the backfield with his high motor. Running mate Ken Ekanem led Virginia Tech with 9.5 sacks a season ago and forced plenty of teams to run away from his side of the field. Throw in the recovering Luther Maddy, and defensive coordinator Bud Foster's defense will be no joke in the trenches in 2015.

2. Ohio State: Joey Bosa and Adolphus Washington
The skinny: Bosa figures to be on the shortlist for every major defensive award after dominating down the stretch during the Buckeyes' run to a national title. He combines a great blend of size, speed and quickness to become a terror off the edge and is borderline unblockable for most offensive tackles. Washington has turned into an interior beast and will be looking to build off a quality 2014 season in which he was often double-teamed.

1. Baylor: Shawn Oakman and Andrew Billings
The skinny: Oakman is one of the most physically imposing players in the country at defensive end and has continued to refine his technique in order to improve on his 11 sacks in 2014. Billings is coming off a first-team All-Big 12 performance as a sophomore and is extremely tough to block. Plus, he's an accomplished weightlifter you don't want to cross. The Bears are known for their flashy offense, but this pair of defenders helps give the team a shot at the College Football Playoff this season.

Best in other leagues:
AAC: Temple, Praise-Martin Oguike and Matt Ioannidis
CUSA: Louisiana Tech, Vontarrius Dora and Vernon Butler
Independents: Notre Dame, Sheldon Day and Isaac Rochell
MAC: Toledo, Trent Voss and Treyvon Hester
Mountain West: Boise State, Kamalei Correa and Armand Nance
Sun Belt: Arkansas State, Ja'Von Rolland-Jones and Chris Stone

Maryland wide receiver Juwann Winfree ditches Terps | CollegeFootballTalk

Wide receiver Juwann Winfree has left the Maryland program, the school announced Wednesday. This news comes less than two weeks after Edsallsuspended Winfree for a violation of Maryland’s student-athlete code of conduct.

Winfree caught 11 passes for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Maryland in 2014. His role in the Terps figured to be more significant in 2015 after some roster turnover from last fall. As noted previously, Maryland was already in a position to replace the top four receivers from a year ago. Stefon Diggs left early for the NFL, Jacquille Veii transferred and Marcus Leakwithdrew from the university last month. Now Winfree will be looking to take his game elsewhere.

Iowa State gives running back Martinez Syria the boot | CollegeFootballTalk

If you can play running back, Iowa State may have a spot on its roster for you. A spot on the team opened up Wednesday afternoon when the school announced the dismissal of running back Martinez Syria. The reason? A violation of team rules, of course.

Syria rushed for 47 yards and a touchdown in five games for Iowa State last fall. During the season he suffered a concussion that forced him to miss even more playing time, and the team held him out of spring practices due to a neck injury. The running back depth was not particularly deep for the Cyclones heading into the 2015 season, and the loss of Syria reduces the total number of backs in the stable by one.

Syria is the third running back gone from last year’s roster too. As noted byThe Des Moines Register, Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads previously confirmed DeVondrick Nealy was no longer a part of the program, andAaron Wimberly graduated. But don’t worry, Class of 2015 running backSheldon Croney should be available to play despite shooting himself in the hand in May.

It’s been a rough offseason for Iowa State running backs.

Boise State and Idaho fans can now buy beer or wine before football games | CollegeFootballTalk
Selling beer at college football games seems to be a bit more trendy and picking up momentum around the country. Fans of the Boise State Broncos may not be able to sip on a beer inside Albertsons Stadium during a game this fall, but the university moved one step closer to potentially crossing that bridge in the future.

On Thursday the Idaho State Board of Education approved a request from Boise State University to sell beer and wine to fans with a ticket for home football games before entering the stadium. Similar requests were approved for Idaho and Idaho State as well.Fans with a ticket to the game will now be allowed to purchase beer or wine inside the Caven-Williams Sports Complex, as long as they meet the 21-year age minimum of course.

Hot Seat Rankings: These 9 college coaches must step up in 2015 - CBSSports.com

Tim Beckman, Illinois (5 -- Win or be fired!): Beckman probably sealed his fate afterallegations of player abuse surfaced. The Illini did make a bowl in Beckman's third season, but the former Toledo coach is 4-20 in the Big Ten. Clearly he wasn't ready for the step up in competition in the Big Ten. If an external investigation clears Beckman he'll need another bowl season -- seven wins, at least --- to keep his job.

Mike London, Virginia (5): It can be argued that a sizable buyout is keeping London employed. London is a regular on any hot seat list going 11-25 since at 8-5 season in 2011. Last year's 5-7 mark was a tease. Sure it was an improvement from 2-10 in ‘13. Sure, the Cavaliers opened 4-2. But they then lost five of their last six, including an 11th straight to Virginia Tech.

Mike MacIntyre, Colorado (4 -- Warm, better start winning): Things have to improve dramatically in Boulder where Mac is 6-18 in two seasons. The Buffs are highly entertaining on offense but have finished 114th and 108th in total defense. Colorado should never be this bad.

Paul Rhoads, Iowa State (4): There may not be a more dedicated or hard-working coach than Rhoads. But it just isn't working out in Ames. Dan McCarney proved you can win there. Rhoads, though, is 5-19 in his last two seasons (29-46 overall). Ultimate disrespect: TCU beat the Clones by 52 and still didn't get into the College Football Playoff. Was that a message from the CFP selection committee about the quality of competition?

Ron Turner, Florida International, (4): In 11 years as a head coach, Turner has only three winning seasons. The last was 14 years ago at Illinois. The Panthers improved from 1-11 to 4-8 in Turner's second season. A shame for a program with quaint facilities that should be able to draw South Florida talent.

Trent Miles, Georgia State (4): There just seems to be nothing to build on. The Panthers have two wins, total, in two seasons under Miles. No team was worse rushing the ball last season. Miles has two decades of assistant coaching experience at the highest levels. It just hasn't materialized at Georgia State, an FBS infant.

Norm Chow, Hawaii (4): This should be a rebound year for the Warriors who have won only eight games in three seasons under the former BYU, NC State, Utah and USC assistant. Chow has been frustrated by shrinking resources, facilities and lack of support by the administration. It's hard not to root for this guy but even in paradise they expect a certain amount of success.

Paul Petrino, Idaho (4): Bobby's younger brother is trying to win at the bottom of FBS' lowest-ranked conference (Sun Belt). The Vandals have won twice in two seasons under Petrino, only three times in the last three years.

Paul Haynes, Kent State (4): This Golden Flash legacy (1987-91) has every motivation to succeed. So far Kent State hasn't under the former Arkansas, Ohio State, Michigan State and Louisville assistant. Haynes is 6-17 in two seasons. Is Haynes' fate sealed? Kent State has one winning season since 2001. Darrell Hazell parlayed an 11-3 2012 season into the Purdue job.

This list rates every FBS coach:

Suspended UCLA coach reinstated by program | CollegeFootballTalk

UCLA assistant coach Adrian Klemm has finished serving the college coaching game’s equivalent of a timeout. Suspended since March for undisclosed recruiting violations, Klemm has been reinstated by the Bruins and may resume coaching duties. Despite an ongoing communication with the NCAA, Klemm has been cleared to return fulfilling his obligations to the program.

“UCLA continues to work jointly and cooperate fully with the NCAA to complete the review of the matters surrounding Klemm’s suspension,” UCLA’s athletic department said in a statement. “To protect the integrity of the ongoing process, UCLA will refrain from further comment at this time.”

In addition to focusing on his responsibilities as running game coordinator, Klemm can now get back into the recruiting work as well, something he was prohibited from participating in while suspended. Many regard Klemm as one of the top recruiters in the country, especially around the Pac-12.

The reason for Klemm’s suspension is still unknown, and it will likely stay that way at this point.
