It is a typical Patriots move. Let go of a vet while he still has trade value and create cap space. The only difference... now BB is playing with Brady's protection in addition to having an effective run game to open up the passing game.

IMO, which is worth nothing, tinkering with the o-line this close to the season is a risky proposition.

Another poster make a good point about the Patriots cupcake schedule. Those first 3 games are essentially bye weeks so the line will have time to gel before they play the tougher, mediocre teams.

Who has BB let go that did anything worth talking about for another team ? I can't think of any.....
Like the Ravens that we let walk, other than Priest Holmes, who has excelled anywhere else ?
It's smart football, I wish we were quicker on the trigger sometimes, wonder what we could have got for injury prone Webb in an off season trade ?.....

Yeah I got to agree. TB is going end up regretting what looked like a good deal IMO.

It may be a short term upgrade for them, I don't know, but I seriously doubt he will be a real difference maker....
And then there's the contract situation and it's particulars, to evaluate if he's even worth the cost....

Unless you're a skilled position guy, hard to really shine when you take them out of the system they excelled in for a long time...Mankin will help the Bucs....the key here imo is will it hurt the Pats, and idt so.

You and me both...Steelers are loyal to a fault if you were good...Ike should be playing somewhere else 2 years ago and Keenan Lewis should be the #1 CB.

I know whatcha mean.....I guess it's hard to do to friends and that, but it's big biz, so it has to be done if you want to keep on winning.....But for the millions these HC's and GM's are making today, I'd fire my own mother, brother and sister.....

Clear salary dump here... guessing the Pats tried to renegotiate a very high contract (for a guard) and Mankind said no. They probably made some calls and made him available to see what they could get before they outright released him.... the Bucs bit

I agree its a curious time for this move and also agree that the question is will it hurt Pats?

Mankins gave up 2nd most sacks last year for a guard and like CDumler said he was a great run blocker. This is the 2014 NFL and the run game just isn't as big a deal, although still important part of Pats offense. Mankins was the lineman who got burnt on a couple big plays in AFCCG.

his contract had a big number and now that frees up some good money that they may use to lock up Revis. Mankins was a holdout a few years ago which Belichick didn't appreciate having to deal with. he saw a chance to dump him and his contract and pulled the trigger banishing him to TB.

Odd timing that's for sure. Their younger guys on the line must be developing well.

nothing but a $$$-issue,........B.B. would trade his own mother for a [2nd/3rd?] rounder.

Morning Mother. BB is still pissed that Mankins was a holdout before getting that last contract. He figured it was time to send him packing to a non-playoff team. BOOM!!

After winning SB 38, The Pats missed the playoffs. When asked about it, Bill said" I made the mistake of letting some players get too old' I'll never do that again" Last week the rookies blocked better than Mankins. This was about the decline.....

I think Mankins was still a very good player and certainly brought a lot to the team and locker room but I think the coaches were starting to see the decline and wanted to sell high.

I'm shocked though how the Patriots players are reacting to this trade (meaning I can't believe they are allowed to have an opinion on it)

But yes.. If he is declining and the Pats could get something from him then do it!

They get salary cap relief, a quality TE and a pick. Good deal for an over paid declining player.

You could kind of see the writing on the wall with Mankins for a while now. This trade makes sense for all assuming NE can fill his spot with a decent player. They get a 2nd TE to pair with Gronk and offset the fact that their WRs aren't that good. Tampa needs OL and also doesn't need a 3rd TE. As any Cowboy fan knows from seeing it done the wrong way...it's always better to get rid of a guy too early than too late.

Related note: Is this a sign that maybe Gronk isn't ready? I was thinking he was going to be 100% for week 1. Any Pats fans know what the deal is? Yes,,,this is a fantasy question...
