I swear I remember Howie Long playing tackle. Fridge? I don't think so. I'm a little surprised you didn't include Leon Lett.

Nah, Howie was a DE. I liked Leon Lett, but All Time...uh, no. Fridge? I'll say this for Fridge. In today's NFL, he wouldn't have as much value, but back in the day when stopping the run was the first priority, he was a beast

Howie Long did play DT. He played both. I had football cards with him as a DT. In fact I am pretty sure he started as a DT & then starting moving around later. My 1st thoughts of howie is as a DT.

According to PFR, Wiki, and ESPN, Long was listed as a DE every season of his career, and he went into the HOF as a DE. He played a little DT in packages. Since this thread was greatest DT's ever, I figured Long would be on the greatest DE's ever thread. If it goes by guys who played a little DT, I need to switch my top guy to Reggie White lol

On the first page of this thread I posted a Pro Football Reference link where Long is listed as a DE-NT.

It's weird that that link has Long's listed position as a DE-NT yet if you look at his year by year stats he's only listed as a LDE.

OK, so when there is a DE thread, is he going on there as well? He played some NT in pass rush sets. Were the Giants DE's from the Super Bowl a few years ago that lined up at DT in racecar sets all really DT's too? If so, I digress

Howie Long Drafted 1981 48th pick Defenive Tackle from Vilanova University.
but I do agree
All his probowls were as a DE.

I remember him as a DE, but others in the thread recall seeing him line up inside and PFR lists him at both positions, so I'm inclined to think that he did play both.

I think he was a NT in college.....I was only 9-10 when Howie was in his prime, thought he was a straight up stud

I also remember him mainly as a DE. And it wouldn't surprise me if he was moved around on the line during his HOF career.

well I took that info straight off of the 1981 draft page. Couple that with the football card I had back in the day saying he was a DT. Pretty sure at some point he was a DT.

but like I said earlier. I believe if you are putting him on a best list it would be the DE list. I was just pointing out he was a DT in his Career at some point.

Damn, he was awesome. I remember him smashing through the lines and dumping Avellini, and chasing Payton down the line. He was very good.
