JD is to blame for trading for Fielder when Prince showed that something was wrong by his decline last season. It has also been reported that scouts were saying last year that Fielder's bat speed had decreased. You don't commit that much money to someone at his age and weight that has started to show signs of decline. Whether that decline was due to the same injury he had this year or if it was due to his age/weight JD was wrong in trading for him. Owing that much money to Fielder for that long could be devastating for this franchise. Knowing how Fielder played last year compared to previous years it much too big of a risk to take.
Blame is a little harsh. If Prince comes back after his surgery and has a good season, then JD will be responsible and not to blame. Who knows at this point. We'll see.

I think we all can say that when we traded Gentry that was a shock. Just about everyone on this board liked him and he was a very good 4th OF. Time will tell if Choice was a good pickup but he will never be the defensive OF Gentry was. We just have to hope he finds himself at the plate in the big leagues.

The bet was that 5-6 years of choice would be more valuable than a couple of a 30 year old Gentry. Jury is still out, but I think Choice will figure it out enough to be worth while.

Choo is just having a down year, and he's injured. He'll bounce back. Based on the numbers this year is clearly the anomaly. Prince is the big one for me. That deal could haunt us if he doesn't come back strong.

Also, Elvis needs to get his shit together. He's being paid way too much for the value he's putting out. We're going to need to make some smart moves regarding pitchers to have a shot next year and in 2016. Otherwise, we may have to wait a couple years for some players to develop.

Technically he's "earned" his money this year, he's "only" making 6.5 million this year

Big contract kicks in next year

Prince had a down year last year, he's had them before there and he's always had good health, was no reason to assume it was health related at the time, should've investigated further bc of the money not bc Fielder had a down year

Always nice, but technically he's earned his money, so that point would be false nonetheless

What about the years he provided 17-18 million in value for about 5 million in salary already?

Right, but that last year before the big jump is when you would love to see another 4 win season out of Elvis. Get the most you can when he's cheap. It's really just a silly justification game, but it's what we do. I've told people be mad at him next year when he gets that big bump, because this year he's playing well enough to cover his pay.

Can he do it next year though?

I'm not sure. But I'm definitely encouraged by his play this year. He's shown a great arm, and has gotten better behind the plate. These two areas he should be able to at least maintain.

He's really not hitting much for average, but he's shown a little pop.

IMO He's still a platoon type player though.

Mild inflammation on Yu's elbow and no sign of anything serious per Jeff Wilson. Good news.

It would be a boost if Ross could finish the season pitching well as a starter. We definitely need some starters to choose from.
