As of June 20, 2014. We are still the Washington Redskins.

If the Redskins should have to change their name one day, then I believe all teams with American Indian names should have to change their names. I am glad to see that there are over 2 Million American Indians in America today. I hope their influence and power continues to grow.

What an interesting post.....thank you!! I'm not sure that this would apply to teams with actual tribe names such as the Seminoles. There has never been a tribe with the name used by Washington. The braves/Indians are objected to because of their mascot not the name. It still is an interesting take.

Stymee... you do realize the Seminole Nation Of Florida filed a similar case in State court and the only reason it went away is because the school is now paying the tribe a tidy sum yearly.

I'm not sure that that case is pertinent to the one here. Whereas Seminole is an actual name of a recognized tribe, the current nickname of our team is not. Similar yes.... so as not to be argumentative maybe that's the answer as you've always insisted. Rename the team using an actual name of a recognized tribe here and pay for the rights to do so. I don't disagree with your premise that money eventually comes into play here, after all there's plenty being made off of the current name now but please be mindful that for some of us who will never see a dime, principal fuels us.

OK see this is one of those statements I call BS on. A Nickname implies that the team has another proper name they go by and they just adopted or people just started calling them this shortened (IE Nick) name.

The Jaguars are refered to as the Jags... Nickname
The Buccaneers are refered to as The Bucs... Nickname
49ers, The Niners.... Nickname.

Our team NAME is The Redskins. If anything Skins would be a nickname. But no one is complaining about that. You are perfectly within your right to dislike the word, and even to consider the name as an insult because of what you have come to associate with the word. But if its a nickname, under what proper name would you refer to the team??

Also, for those of us that support the name and want the team to keep it, this about principle as well. I grew up loving MY Redskins. The team name has never been associated with this racial aingst of the Native Americans every one is screaming about. To me a Redskin is was and always will be a player for my football team. To me it has no other meaning.

Stymie , i am catholic and i object to the saints using religious symbols of my faith as a part of their football team .

the saints didnt originally intend to mock my religion when they named themselves that but times have changed and Christianity is under attack from secular forces designed to bring about its end

but fans of the saints blaspheme my religion and the pope

i am in the minority in this because most catholics look at the saints name as a badge of courage but alas i dont follow football at all but all i see are a bunch of people mocking my religion and it hurts me

where is your outcry and defense of my belief's ?

how do i take a letter from a senator , Sn Cantell , who said she was appalled and never heard of such a name , but failed to mention the HS and college she went too both were named redskins ? never heard a peep from her in protest but she sure as shooting didnt mind taking a a college education that jump started her career from the racist school . or better yet she attended the playoff game from the free freaking ticket she got from the racists skins

how about champ bailey or the other hypocrites like mark schlereth who took substantial paychecks while playing for the racist skins and never once uttered a word about it in a public forum ? what , they all found god ? or did they succumb to PC .

i dont get the " i follow the home team defense either " Robert E Lee followed the home team too and what side of history was he on again ?

if you are that offended by it you should pick another team to follow and let your actions be in line with you belief

losing the trade mark does one thing . when snyder sues someone for bootlegging redskins logo'd apparel he loses that presumption of innocence the trademark provides him not an insurmountable obstacle

i am sick and tired of the nanny state thought police telling me how i should think and wasting my tax dollars on a football team name . that isnt govt's role . the US govt has way bigger fish to fry then this PC BS

however i can compromise . we could keep our logo and simply call ourselves the skins . most fans do that anyway

Those are links to the tribes themselves, the heading describes why they are so listed. In as much as an explanation goes, it is too complicated to actually detail how it come to be and continues. Just to avoid your penchant to attack without basis, maybe this will help you. Yeah, yeah, I know ........V.I.C.T.I.M.S.

Stymiee, what in the hell are you saying?? This is just more babble talk. Did these tribes denounce the moniker or not? If so, please provide the evidence since you apparently have seen it. That's all I've been asking for. Sending out Wiki links to each tribe is just more worthless drivel. Show me where a significant portion of the NA community has rallied to denounce the name as derogatory. If they have real offense as it somehow degrades them, then I will change tunes and support the name change.

Thank you......for responding to my post without first understanding how it came into play. You would be so lucky to be Politically Correct, Socially correct, or just plain correct.

BTW: There a greater threat to the nation and you represent it perfectly!!!

You have no idea what I represent or who or how I support them. Until a year or so ago you had no problem with the name. Now you have a cause and the hell with what those native people say.

You have no interest in the issues the native tribes face daily, you said so yourself.

I agree with dad, go find another team. Root for the Vikings, surely the Scandinavian people aren't offended. How about the Fighting Irish, all of us who of Irish descent are heavy drinkers and fighters.

My GF just told me we are going to sue Cracker Barrel because it has a racist conotation. :noidea:

An interesting point that I did not realize:

This standard isn’t concerned with how widely offensive a trademark may be now, or with how the general population or even a majority of the group in question views it. It didn’t matter to the patent office that polls show substantial majorities of the public and the Native American community do not find the name offensive. A 2004 Annenberg Public Policy Center poll found that 90 percent of Native Americans said the name didn’t bother them. Instead, the board focused on a 1993 resolution adopted by the National Congress of American Indians denouncing the name. The board simply extrapolated that, since the National Congress represented about 30 percent of Native Americans, one out of every three Native Americans found it offensive. “Thirty percent is without doubt a substantial composite,” the board wrote.

You're right, I stand corrected.....I should have used common name instead of nickname, thanks, nice catch.

If you are indeed offended by it then either do something to change it or not ...your choice. Just as you have that choice, so do we!! Tell your friend(s) the same thing.

He then made this assertion (my reply followed)

I am still waiting for his response as to which group he belongs to.

again that response is simple stick and move tactics that doesnt answer the question the answer that should have been given is that those names should be changed as well and because my side of the debate is if some are offended then it should be stricken .

and how about Oklahoma ? and what about braves or chiefs . you dont think that calling a native american "chief " or "Brave" or "indian" are offensive if used in a certain way ? your hole debate strips away the intent of the usage of the word .

no one intends to cause harm when using redskins in association of the football teams or teams

my point is you say you have been a fan your hole life but you support the team by attending games , watching games , buying paraphernalia but bemoan the fact that they are called redskins ? so your outrage has limits like robert e lee's ?

you are either against all the offensive names and want them to be treated fairly or you do not . i suspect this whole debate is PC sponsored hogwash and a power /money control grab

It is not my responsibility to speak on behalf of senator Cantwell, Champ Bailey et. al. If you have an issue with them take it up with them.

Ronald Regan, one of the worse administrative domestic terrorists in the history of this country is revered by many and hated by many, the same can be said of Robert E. Lee. You've said that you wanted to keep this site out of the political realm, I'll respond to your inquiries related to Reagan but will not dishonor your original request beyond that.

You do realize that your insistence that I select another team based on my historical position is as Ludacris as my asking you to select another team because you do not hold the same views as I do, don't you?

Historically, change comes incrementally, the trademark is but one step. What's more difficult is acceptance, at it's root there's fear. I do not fear the real possibility that the common name will ever change, you on the other hand have threatened to abandon your lifelong team if the name changes, yet you question my loyalty?

It is interesting that you seem to enjoy injecting "PC" as if by doing so you make a point and worse point to the hypocrisy of others. Your own selective use of PC terms, the one that you like/are comfortable with vs. the ones that you don't or are not comfortable with, renders whatever your point or other's hypocrisy moot.

Glad to see that you are now willing to compromise, in the end that is all that will happen, maybe we all like it maybe not. Admit it Dad, once you get beyond that little fellow inside of your head that disrupts your truth, living in the real world where everyone is entitled to their own truth and not yours may not be as awful as it seems at first blush. BTW: All married men or men in relationships with a girlfriend knows this.

That is the answer that YOU would have given or wish it so given. I gave a very thoughtful and challenging response to him. If there are groups that seek these changes and are truly offended by them I would support their efforts if legitimate.

The other day Shark and I had a very interesting give and take related to intent, where use of the common name is concerned. It might be instructive to refer to that very interesting part of this thread.

Correction, I root for my home teams' success, it is rare that we buy tickets or items sold in the name of this team. On those rare occasions that an item is purchased it is one with ONLY the logo or has both logo and Washington ONLY. Outside of what's on the TV screen or on radio the common name does not come into my home nor is it worn. It was not allowed in my parents home either (just for the record)

I stand against ALL offensive names, even though like most I do use the 7 curse words more often than I should. If there is a(n) legitimate cause that helps change the course of historical improvement be it one that is instigated by a single voice or the many I stand with those seeking improvement. So do you!!!
