Holy cow. So anyone can now legally create Redskin apparel?

Not saying I agree or disagree with people upset over the name, but this move here is a game changer.

Well thats that. Next comes the class action suite against the team for disparaging Native Americans.

That's what it sounds like to me.

No...the next step is an appeal through the courts on this ruling and a request for a stay during the appeals process. If the stay is granted then it's status quo. If not then anyone will be able to create and sell merchandise with the name and logo on it.

Not yet, they still get the protection of the trademark during appeal, which I'm sure they will do.

Holy cow is right. Here's my response on the general board:

Definitely a landmark win for those parties, insisting the name Redskins is a 'derogatory' term. I find it comical, but that's of no import. A decision has been reached. So be it.

Should be very interesting to see how this all plays out. But it is definitively a very VALID shot across the bow, as it is quite possible that this decision, could likely impact in the 'millions of dollars' the revenues of the skins franchise. That's how you get things changed, affect the bottom line and potential sponsorships.

We'll see how it plays out at the state level and/or any appeal, if that is even a course that can be pursued.

My opinion has been stated enough times in regards to 'content and context' and civil liberties, with regards to this issue so I'm not gonna beat the proverbial dead horse.

I'm sure this will come as validation for those posters who feel 'an epic injustice' towards the NAs has been addressed. Well, I continue to posit that this will do absolutely NOTHING towards impacting the REAL issues/difficulties that today's NAs face within our country today.

Too bad, public policy towards NAs doesn't have such a ground swell of outrage. About Changes that could actually help and positively impact policies.

But at least no one will use the word 'redskin' when discussing Our NA brothers.

Sadly this thing is in the court of public opinion. And its turned into one of those cases where the wants of the few will out weigh the thoughts of the many. We are going to lose this one and they are going to force Dan to change the name. Worst part is they are going to pile on the civil cases for damages on top of it.

I'm afraid that is a very real possible outcome. :L

If I were an Indian, I would find the term " Native American" to be the most offensive of them all.

Fine - change the name already. However - worst part of this is that a makes a complete loser like Harry Reid look like he is actually doing something in office. What a disgrace.

Using the tribe name is always the very best option, if possible.

Ironically, it has been the wants of the few in relation to the thoughts of the many that have also become landmark rulings in favor of the few throughout the history of this countries minorities.

If D. Snyder was smart he would see the eventuality of this fight and announce that against his better judgment he's being forced to rename the team. A protracted court fight might last for years, to the detriment to him and his team with the same outcome. This is the time for him to act and do so wisely.

Finally, to all of those who proclaim that they will no longer support the team if the name changes, there are two things at work here. The first, is their support seems based solely on the name and not the team itself. The team doesn't change ONLY the name......the common name. Here's what I mean, Let's say Mr. Snyder decides to drop the common name and in it's stead refers to the franchise as the Washington Football Club (WFC Inc.) No logo, same colors, do you still root for the team?

The wife wants to run some errands, but I promise to respond to all replies just as soon as I get back.

This was expected and is by no means over. There is a lengthy appeals process that takes years through multiple courts, if need be. During this time, the trademark is protected.

if Snyder and the NFL agree to change the name, I hope they go with something so PC ridiculous that it makes everyone step back and say "what the F are we doing here". Something like "Washington Humans" or "Washington Beings".

I've been a fan of this team for over 40 years. A name change doesn't affect my loyalty at all.

As for dan giving up the fight, I don't see that happening yet (I do eventually). He will hold out until he gets financial support from the League to cover his costs and lost revenues. You can bet he's going to claim that a name change will cost dearly. Or maybe he holds out for a Super Bowl.
