Oh I see. It's better to go down in a ball of flames like Jean Van De Velde and others have rather than just quietly win a tourney. Makes sense.
If it wasn't the 18th at Doral (or a hole that had water everywhere) I may agree that it was a pussy play.
However... His first 71 holes of hard work afforded him the opportunity to bump it down there. The goal is to win however you can.

Fair enough, but didn't he boast to the world in his post round interview that he was "a top 5 player in the world"? Sure didn't look like he believed that on the tee box at 18.
I wasnt a fan of him saying that at all however I know how that feels right after you win something.. You feel a little high on yourself. Id be surprised if he said the same thing a few days from now.
Reed did what he "had" to do. It would be pure insanity to pull the driver out. However, in Toby's defense pulling the 6 Iron does seem to be overly cautious. And I don't ever recall a guy laying up and not reaching the fairway. Normally in that scenario you see a guy pull the 5 wood and bail it out to the right.
I could have lived with a 5-wood, but not a 6-iron. and not even reaching the fairway? That would have had you playing the rest of the hole without any pants in my day.
lol ... It's funny how that rule has withstood the test of time.

There's winning then there's putting a dress on in order to win. At that level, you do not hit a six iron off the tee on a 450 yard hole; especially if you don't even reach the fairway. It looked bad. I think I'd rather lose like a pro than win like a bitch.
I was once in a 6 man playoff for 5 spots to make the Florida State Amateur.... The first guy up duck hooked his teeball into the houses left. All 5 of us left to go all walked back to our bags and grabbed irons lol. It happens.
