I think he was a must resign for the Packers. He was their best player in the secondary last year. Losing him could make a bad overall defense historically bad.
Packers knew they had to resign him and Shields knew the Packers knew they had to resign him. Therefore, he had the leverage to back them into a corner and get more than he was worth. Other teams were probably looking at him and I know reporters mentioned the Bears here, but more in the 6 to 7 mil a year range.
Doesn't bode well for teams looking to resign/sign a CB in FA... Shields' $39mil/4yr deal will put Verner/Talib/Grimes value upwards of $50mil/4-5yr deals. At least the $10mil cap raise will help!
That's probably why they made the contract loaded on the front end. But lets not forget that the problem with that defense starts with Capers.
Exactly what I was thinking. The corners that are top 5 in the NFL will now want EVEN MORE than what Shields is getting.
I wish this shit worked in real corporate jobs haha.
