It's not the banning of the word that he said was "almost racist". It's the fact that they singled out the one word and dont seem to care about all the other foul language being thrown around. You have to wonder why target that word but 'fucking faggot cocksucker" is OK.

I think faggot will also be banned. It's not just that he felt they were singling the "N" word out, though. He said it's a common word that he hear's on nearly every set of downs and constantly on the sidelines and locker room. His implication is that banning that word in itself is "almost racist."

I don't really have an opinion on it. I know it's commonly used among black guys and isn't accepted as much when said by white guys. It's the equivalent of us (whites) saying dude or bro.

Nothing Sherman says has even a shred of credibility, so it doesn't really matter what he has to say about it.

"Racist" is now a term that bounces off of me when I hear it.

Truly doesn't have much meaning, or affect anymore.

Thank you MSNBC

I just think it's funny that it's racist if it's used and now it's racist if it can't be used. :)

I'm sure he didn't intend for it to seem so hypocritical but it certainly sounds silly.

Richard Sherman thinks banning the so called "N" word is "almost racist."

Do you guys agree with him?

NFL Richard Sherman disagrees with ban - ESPN

I think it's a stretch to say that, but I understand what they are saying. Whites basically don't use that word so you are telling blacks what they can or can't say to each other. If you are creating a rule that will then pretty much only apply to blacks it is ALMOST racist. He did use the word almost you know.

It's quite okay to object to words or usages but banning them?

Talk about opening a can of worms!

I gotta agree.

The N word has this in common with the others - they're all inflamatory and can start fights on the field, or be used to disrepect officials.

Tensions run pretty high on the gridiron at times so it's already a tinder box. All it takes is one wrong word in the wrong context for benchs to clear.

We can't ask the refs to decide if a word was used in the proper context or not, so we have to put down a rule that applies to all.

If you're going to ban one swear word, you have to ban them all.

This is coming right before the new distribution deals. I'm sure the networks are putting pressure on them to clean up their language because it often comes through on the broadcasts. This is just the beginning.

Honestly the NFL has every right to do this. There are not many work environments that would even come close to allowing the way NFL players and even some coaches talk to one another. Yes I understand the NFL is a different work environment than most places in the world but there still has to be some kind of standard. Throw in with the NFL becoming one of the biggest businesses in the country they are being put front and center. Especially you throw just how much more we are allowed into the NFL environment with shows like Hard Knocks and others.

Again this is still a work environment. These players don't like it then they can go find a pay check somewhere else. This isn't any kind of violation of their freedoms as they have been getting away with way more than almost any other work environment in the country. Pretty much this is just the NFL trying to catch back up at least business wise with the rest of the country.

Hell, there are not many sports leagues that get away with it. And when they do it they say it under their breath. During an NFL game they're screaming their heads off across the field between every play. I cuss like a sailor and I light it up at work quite often, but whenever the bottom line could be threatened by it I keep it clean and I expect everyone else to do the same.

Which this is pretty much the reason the NFL is having to do this. This is not them trying to control the players but more trying to control the bottom line. The TV deals are where the NFL makes a huge chunk of their money and since they are on cable tv networks that are supposed to be kid friendly they can't have their players yelling these obscenities on tv. Now I know some will say well then why not ban every cuss word? Well my guess is this is just the beginning but they are starting with what most would consider to be the most offensive.

This is a work environment and an employee is expected to abide by the rules. I know if I said that word at work I would be fired on the spot if anybody of importance at least heard it. My guess is it is the same in most places. Or at least there would be a very harsh warning.

:agree:

Just like cracker, greaser, chink, faggot, if you are banning the N word than those slurs apply as well, if its not okay for anyone else to say it then blacks shouldn't be using it either. Doesn't matter WHO is saying it.

It sounds to me like Sherman almost got a Stanford education, must be a slow news day when that makes headlines.

Personally I think he's just trying to rustle Goodell's jimmies. He thinks it's a bad idea to ban the word ( and it is) but knows Goodell is a moron who won't listen to rational thinking. So he's pulling the reverse race card because it's something Goodell will listen to. At least I hope that's the case since it'd be pretty funny.

It's not difficult to keep the profanity off the air. They already do. Policing player on player interactions is just another step towards stupefying the league.

If Sherman has an issue with this, he can speak to the Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation. They are they ones pushing for this. Then he can accuse them & their recommendation of being "almost racist".
