It's not difficult to keep the profanity off the air. They already do. Policing player on player interactions is just another step towards stupefying the league.

Every game I hear some profanity multiple times through each game. It's harder than you think. If you want "live" games, it would be nearly impossible to keep all the profanity off the air unless the NFL enacts rules that encompasses & prohibits this type of language.

If Sherman has an issue with this, he can speak to the Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation. They are they ones pushing for this. Then he can accuse them & their recommendation of being "almost racist".

Fuck them and their PC bullshit.

I may sound like a homer but i really think sherman has a point. so words like fuck you, eat shit, suck my dick, you play like a pussy is ok but using the N word is what draws a penalty? we ALL know the white players arent using the word on the field so basically this word is to ban black players from using it....

my question is is it a penalty if two players on the same team say to each other congratulating them on a good play?

I think you all are missing the possible application of this rule. I agree with Sherman ten-fold. This would absolutely be racist if this rule were implemented. How many times is this word used between two black guys in a playful boys-club-type manner? I would be willing to wager that it is a shit ton more often than it is used as a derogatory comment. Does that make it right? absolutely not. Fuck those N.... oh shit, I almost said it. Naughty naughty.

In all seriousness though. This rule is already essential on the books. If you are using derogatory comments against someone, then you are already going to be flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. If they implement this rule then those black guys bantering with each other will also be flagged even though no ill-will was meant by the comment

Using the phrase "almost racist" makes any point he is trying to make irrelevant. Stupidity like that shuts down debate & assigns labels. People want the word removed from the lexicon. It has nothing to do with race & the removal of the usage of the word is being promoted by people that share his ethnicity. They aren't targeting just black players, they are targeting all players. Just because one ethnicity is the primary source of that word being used, doesn't make the targeting removal of that word "almost racist". Sherman needs learn to express himself better if he is trying to make a point.

If they want to call themselves the N word, who cares? Let them. Putting a penalty on it is just stupid.

Shouldn't the NFL address the Washington "Redskins" team name first before trying to penalize players on the usage of the N word?

As for penalizing foul/racial language...where do you draw the line? Do you ban ALL racial language? Do you go as far as banning foul language and derogatory terms? What about using fag and gay?

Do certain words get a 15 yard penalty and another 5 yard?

I say fine a player if he is caught using it (in game or off the field), but throwing a yellow penalty flag on the field during the game is pretty dumb.

What if...let's say for example...a scrum of players are pushing each other. A ref hears the N word being said and immediately penalizes who he presumes had said it. He throws a 15 yard penalty flag and it leads to a first down that changes the outcome of the game. Hours after the game end, replays show that the player flagged didn't actually say it and was actually the player on the opposing team.

Its racist to say it, its racist to ban it.

Some people are just always looking for something to bitch and moan about. Quit trying to play the "i am the victim" card all the time. It gets pathetic

It's Richard Sherman. We all know he's an idiot. Add this to his long list of stupid behavior. He's like the NFL's Sarah Palin...if it's a slow news day, just ask RS his opinion on an issue and boom....controversial headline.

more rules aren't going to make anything better, they have enough rules. Let officials officiate. Words are just words and people use them differently. I suspect if you've found your way on the field in an NFL game, you've heard and probably said most of them at some point. Either ban them all and fine and call infractions every time a "damn" is uttered or someone pulls out the "gosh darn it all to heck" mandatory suspension. OR let the officials do their job. If they're going to let people say stuff, let them say stuff and when or if either side escalates it, well they have rules for that already. Apply them

The NFL is spending more and more money on putting microphones on players. The NFL Network even has their own FX show with gameday sound and footage. My guess is a lot of great plays are getting ruined by questionable audio material and they know they can make more money off of this stuff. The F word isn't as controversial as the NFL trumpeting racial slurs in their stock vault.

Yea, how pathetic are people like that? The worse are the people that seek out and bitch about what they perceive to be bitching.

The whole people saying where are they going to draw the line thing makes little sense to me. Yes there are other cuss words but to me there is no other word that causes more of an uprising than the use of the N Word. Look at the Eagles receiver as a great example. People were calling for him to be fired, stoned, beaten, and many other things. I don't see people freaking out when somebody says the F Word. Now I could see the word faggot and such banned especially if the cameras catch it geared towards Michael Sam at some point but for now it seems the NFL is set to start with this word.

People also have to remember the players are employed by the NFL. If the NFL tells them this is no longer acceptable then it is abide by the rules or get out. Not like they are asking a whole lot. Stop saying one word...Oh man that sounds sooooo tough. When there are so many other words in the English language why is it so hard to just eliminate one of them? Throw in these guys are supposed to be examples for the black community. There are many who would love to see this word gone yet these players encouraging the younger generation to keep it alive it just continuing this idea of racism for the next generation.

Bullshit.

If they were making a rule against ALL offensive and foul language, we wouldn't even be having this discussion!

It's complete BS, and it's blatantly hypocritical.

You can't allow every other slur and curse to be uttered, and then try to ban just ONE. That's a joke in and of itself.

THATS why Sherman said what he said......because he knows only the black players will be affected by this.

Lets face the facts here - this word exists, and has the connotations it does, because of WHITE PEOPLE. It's a negative because we MADE it that way. So for us to complain about it's use now, is a joke.

Oh please there are plenty in the black community that want this word gone as well. Don't act like this is just the White community that are pushing for this.

I have no problem with the elimination of the word from the HUMAN language, thats not the issue or point here.

We're asking a white run organization to police a word whites made in the first place. That's like asking a robber to work at the bank he just robbed.

The entire rule is just pointless, and only really affects ONE demographic in the league. That makes it discriminatory, and yes, racist to a degree.

Its just a bad idea, ANY time you single out one facet of many, and attack it. If they want to police language, they need to go all in and police ALL of it, not just one word.

Seems like I remember a white guy named Riley Cooper causing quite a stir last off season when he said it. In fact pretty sure it was only behind the Hernandez story for popularity around the country.

If someone is called a nigster, will a penalty be called. I guess the question would be, how close to it can you get before its a penalty.

Hard to believe that they were teammates in college.
