Because this is a BUSINESS Shark! Riley is just that, average and can be replaced. Rak on the other hand is VERY GOOD, not elite. He wants elite money and the Skins are not willing to pay that just yet. Maybe when he finally has an elite season, he will get elite money. For now, the tag will do and let's see how he approaches the season playing under the tag.

We have to be smart with our money. Having Rak play under the tag would be the smart thing to do if a deal can't be worked out. If Riley won't play for $5M per year then let him walk.

You are not agreeing with me or anyone else. Your opinion has been to sign "our" guys to deals only they are agreeable to. Most Skins fans on here don't think Rak is replaceable but having said that, most Skins fans don't think he is elite either. That is arguably the money he wants, elite pay. I want Rak back at 10-11M per year for 5-6 years. I could care less if Riley returns to be honest. He has done nothing to set himself apart from other ILB's and a 4th rounder for him may have been a little too high at the time since we have the ability to look back now.

I doubt it. YOu tag him and he signs the tender and you end up not trading him, you are then stuck paying elite money for a guy who isnt elite which is what they have been trying not to do in the first place. Rak will be a free agent, if he decides to come back on the cheap the Skins would likely try and resign him. But my thinking is, he will hit the market, some one else WILL pay him what he is asking for, and we will be starting three new LBs this year.

Honestly I see two scenarios. Rak is tagged or Rak receives a 6yr deal. No way he walks. Also I see Riley testing the market and coming back. some folks are getting caught up in tag money but with bowen likely cut and carrier to take a pay cut...we should still have at least 21mil available before the draft. now's no time to be cheap

We can then draft a WR to add more weapons to the offense, find us a couple of elite players worthy of the title and in three years who knows. IM not dramatizing, Im agreeing to the extreme.

Cutting Bowen and Carriker(or pay cut for him) should put us around 36mil. Tagging Rak puts us at 25, signing Riley at 4mil per still gives us 21.
Plenty of money to add another FA on offense or D

Any deal for Rak will likely be cap friendly for the first two to three years. His cap number going into 2014 would likely be around $5-6 million and Rileys cap number would likely be around $3 million. IM basing this off of the cap numbers that players who got deals in the range of Rak and Riley got last year. So realistically if we gave Rak a deal that averaged $10 million a year over five years, his cap number for year one would cap out at $6 million. Riley on a 5 year deal that averages $7 million a year would hit us for $3 million.

So both would likely cost less than $10 million against the cap this year, Next year and likely would hit us for no more that $15 million combined in 2016. But everyone is hung up on them getting paid like elite players, which is why I have gone the route that i hope they both leave and we can go searching for ELITE players to replace them.

No, I understand your frustration. Realistically though, even I got caught up in the 10mil(rak) + 7mil(riley) hits.
Its easy to overlook that most contracts today are backloaded and not the same per year.
how ironic that if there were at better OLB available...we'd have to pay him 12+.
Also while you and I don't completely agree on Riley...I think some be willing to give 7mil to an older or another ILB
other than Riley because of production ex...Karlos Dansby..32 probably someone to stay away from...but will see another payday

IM really looking forward to seeing what kind of deal Butler got from the Bolts, because I know he was asking for the same type of deal. Also has the same issue with injuries. And thats actually a BAD thing?? I seriously think, if we had a half decent secondary, and a little more pass rush from the down three, our defense would be good enough for us to have been in the division hunt last season. And again, if you got guys like Ellerbe making $7 million a year average. And guys who MISSED ten games the year before getting that same kind of bump, Riley atleast has to be in the conversation. I would prefer a solid tackling machine for 16 games at $7 million a year average, over a ball hawk that misses on average 1/4 of the season for the same amount.

Like I said GK, you win. Riley isnt worth it. Hope he walks and we can go out and sign an injury prone game changer. Because apparently making tackles within the scheme that was coached and doing what the coaches asked of him and actually being good at it clearly is not enough.
