Ahhh so glad FA starts in two weeks. I don't know how we manage to have this same convo annually. no 1st rounder really changes the game. Personally, I was hoping to land the best DL with our 34th pick. That seems like the most important team(not position) need IMO. It doesn't look like Tuitt or another high graded prospect will be there.
None of the ILB's(other than Mosley) appear ready to start next to Riley(who is just average in play recognition/play making) so WR/OL appears to be the positions where you'll get the most value with your 1st pick.

I'm also assuming ILB & FS WILL be addressed in FA and not thru the draft.

Skinem.... I will admit Im a tad bit biased in my opinion. BUt I think going after a WR with the top pick is a bit of a waste at the moment and here is why.

1. We were a one or two read offense last year in most respects. So while many will say we have nothing past Garcon, I would counter with we have no idea what we really have past Garcon because our offense was not really capable of getting to the 3rd and 4th read. It was either a pass to one side or the other in most cases.

2. I think there will be O=-Lineman and secondary players who could start for multiple teams and would be serious upgrades to this team available with the 34th pick.

3. And more to the point, I would prefer a solid starter on the O-line, at ILB or in the secondary over a projected megastar WR who happened to slide to 34 because without a solid O-line or defense... said named Megastar will run into the same problem as all our most recent #2 WRs any way.

you target needs and if there is value there you make the pick . if not you go to the BPA

You said it best, dad! We have no 1st round pick. Just like every draft, every so-called 1st rounder is not going. We have an early 2nd rounder. A player of significant talent will fall to us. It might be someone, who we just knew wouldn't fall. If it is a defensive player or offensive player, so be it.

To say BPA no matter what is rather broad. What if the BPA happens to be a OT and we already have Williams and signed some one like Saffold?? then do we still take the BPA if thats the case?? Reality is, teams are going to have a loose group of targeted positions going into any draft. And that group is going to center around actual team needs at some point. the team will probably have a list of players they reasonably expect to still be available when we pick, that list will include some positions of need. They will pick out of that list the best player available.

I say BPA but I agree only to an extent. If you have Williams at 14 mil/season and sign Saffold at 7 mil/season, then of course you don't take an OT at 34. Just like we wouldn't take a QB, RB, or OLB at 34. When you have too much vested in a single position, you can't afford to waste more capital on that position.

Gk... you keep saying we should take the BPA, but you also seem to think the only logical outcome of that could be a WR which you also think is one of if not our most pressing need. Me detects a little double edged sword action here. Personally IF and I stress the if, but IF WR is truely the PBA then fine I hope they go for it. But I think the truth is a bit more like, there will be a guy or two at a position of need OTHER than WR, who could start for a multitude of teams and could be considered the BPA when we pick. I think the pick could be a OG, ILB or CB/S... but yes it could be a WR too. But to say it has to be BPA and the BPA will likely be a WR is more of what you seem to want and not a given as you seem to imply.

Almost everywhere I have looked has 5 OTs going in round 1, Mosley (the only starting ILB) going in round 1, the top two CBs gone in round 1 (and that's all that seem to be starters), and the top three safeties gone in round 1. The guards in this draft are unimpressive from what I have seen and read.

I believe the best value will be at WR but if there is a better player, I want the better player at 34. If Mosley, Tuitt, or Hageman are there...I'm in. There are other players I'd be happy with here as well, I just don't think they will be available.

Good point Dad. Under my free agent plan, I would like us to sign McCluster. Our WR corps. would be Garcon, McCluster and Benjamin. Throw in Reed at TE and RG3 will have his weapons.

You assume he would be a megastar and thus the better player. My thinking is if we had a Good offensive line at pass blocking, maybe our Megastar QB who we already dumped 4 draft picks into could do what other franchise QBs do and make the WRs they have better.

Just a thought mind you. But if we take the supposed Megastar WR, and our QB doesnt have the time to make his reads (which many swear he needs) then the megastar WR is pointless because unless he becomes the #1 target, Rg3 wont get to his third read any way without better protection.

Now you assume that the non-megastar OL is going to succeed. That's the point. You take the better player. If the WR has a chance to be a megastar, then if he doesn't, he still has a good chance at being a good player. Where if you take the OL who you hope is going to be a good player, he has a better chance at being a flop.

Actually if you are playing the odds, you have a MUCH higher chance of an O-lineman becoming a good player than a skill position player. And if your line is crap, it dont matter how good your WRs are because your QB wont have a chance to throw him the ball.

Side note, Im still waiting for our franchise QB to be able to do what franchise QBs do. If we need to keep feeding him WR's... he might not actually be that good.

Because unless Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Marqise Lee, or Kelvin Benjamin either throws out a knee or gets caught doing unnatural acts with a goat and some string cheese, none of them will be there at 34 when we pick. And honestly these are the only day one for sure starters at Wr even as a #2 in this draft worthy of a 1st round pick. Any one else might be second round worthy. But Im not sold that Odell Beckham is exactly what you guys are hoping for.

Yea, but a good offensive line or a good defense helps the entire team. Throwing more WRs at the problem before fixing the line and the defense is like putting new paint on the walls when the foundation of the house is faulty. It may look great, but in the long run it wont hold up.
