I'm probably older than you are and I saw plenty of their games. Those Boys teams had one of the greatest collections of talent on both sides of the ball in the history of the game. Several of his peers could have won it all with that group. Aikman was decent but he's not even close to top 5 all-time. I don't know if he's top 5 amongst his peers. Young, Elway, Favre, Marino, Kelly, Moon ... nope he doesn't even crack that top 5.

How can you say Jim Kelly and Steve Young were better than Aikman without debate? really? I was a Niner fan in those times and I wouldn't even say Young was better or worse. A top collection of the greatest is a hard task to pick but to those guys mentioned are better than Aikman without doubt is silly. Marino, yes, he had nobody to throw to and yet he bossed the AFC East with ease.

There are 'team' quarterbacks and 'individual' quarterbacks.

Easy example....

Peyton Manning is an individual quarterback, he is great because of how well he plays. He's had some good teams, and some bad teams, regardless Peyton has always had to make plays. He never has a defense to help him win championships.

Tom Brady is a team quarterback, he is great because of the coaching and system he is in. Surrounded by a great team too. Would he be as successful without Belichick or the great defense the Pats had in the early/mid 00's?

Top 5 of all time? How is it weighted? By 'team success' or making 'individual plays/talent?'

This is complete NONSENSE.

Well, maybe not the Jags but the Rams and Browns could win alot more games with Aikman.

Rams right now are playing well, you and I both know as Ram fans that if we had a great QB we would be having a completely different record...

The Rams would be a playoff team with him, yes. I think it took awhile for Fisher to figure things out and get the right product on the field (Stacy at RB, Saffold at G, etc)

I hate defending Brady, too. Patriots are probably my 3rd least favorite team

Kelly is the only one who's arguable, imo. True Aikman didn't put up big numbers because he wasn't called on to pass as much as the others. So there's an excuse/reason there. But even his rate stats when he was called on to pass do not compare favorably to those other guys. The guy threw nearly as many Ints as he did TDs. For the era he played in that alone should eliminate him from this discussion. I forgot all about Montana whose last 6 seasons overlapped with Aikman's 1st 6. I'd take Joe's last 6 over any 6 of Aikman's in a heartbeat. With Young it isn't even close. He was better by every other measure but rings.

Stabler & Bradshaw ??? There are some old school QBs that should be in the conversation, but those aren't 2 of them. From a purely physical ability standpoint, the QB position has probably changed less than any other over time. There are plenty of old school guys who, had they grown up in this era, would still be great. But I'm not going to bother to argue with the kids who don't know any better.

I've been watching football since the 1st SB, does that sound like a kid to you ?....If so, you better take a course in first grade math.....I did forget Roger Staubach and would have him in the #3 spot, dropping Marino only because he never won a SB.....

I'm not sure how any of this makes it easier to pass back then.

My mistake Money, I must have gotten your post mixed up with someone else's....
I read one that said Jonny U didn't qualify for the list because it was easier for them back in the days of the RB...
Sorry, I'm gettin' old, man !!!!

These threads are always 100% bullshit.

You're right about Staubach. The guy was terrific. He'd be great in any era. But if you're the one who had Bradshaw & Stabler on his list, well that's just wrong. Oh and 1963 Bears > Giants 14-10 was my first one. That was pretty much the end of the road for Tittle, who also deserves a mention if we're talking old timers.

I used winning a SB as one of the measurements and there is only 5 spots.....Granted there are lots of other qb's that deserve to be on there, but these are my top 5, I'm sure everyone's are a little different....
Montana was the coolest ,most clutch qb of my time and Staubach was the comeback kid, Bradshaw has what 4 SB's, Johnny U needs no buildup and although he is last on my list ,Stabler was the best lefty I ever saw, has a SB and played under John Madden......You may disagree but that is a major group of qb's right there my friend !!

I would need some explanations before I send out my list.

1, for all those voting in joe Montana, is that because he was so great, steve young was his backup? or because jerry rice made him look like a 4-time superbowl winner?

2, for all those voting for dan marino, is it because of the # of superbowls he didn't win? or his pathetic performance in Ace Ventura?

I hate to break it to you but the team with the best quarterback doesn't always win the Super Bowl.
