I like Jim but him complaining about the qb being treated as a runner during the read-option is a joke. The league made the right decision.

That was my first reaction too, but he actually made a good point. He said that you could call it rolling out to make a pass.

If the QB gives the ball to someone else, I think it should depend on whether the ball goes backwards or forward. If it goes backwards, it's a running play. If it goes forward, it's a passing play.

However, most of the time the read-option is nothing like the "option" play that was so popular in college 10 years ago. You'll see the rare option play where the QB has the option to give the ball up, but most of the time the read option is just the QB deciding whether he wants to hand the ball off in standard run formation or if he wants to keep it and run himself.

He is emotional. That's part of what makes him the coach that he is and as successful as he has been.

The way I see it.... then make a QB who fakes a hand off from under center face the same result. Unless the QB makes an obvious attempt to run with the ball, I don't see why simply being in the shotgun formation makes this differentiation of the rule. If a fake to a RB means the QB can be hit as a running back, then that should apply to all fakes to RB's from shotgun or from under center.

There is a difference between a quarterback faking a hand off and going back to pass and faking a hand off and acting like a runner. Running backs get hit all the time when a hand off is faked to them, the quarterback shouldn't be any different when they are fulfilling a similar role.

Hey Podunkparte, I wish I was kidding about this, but that first gif that you posted reminds me so much of my little brother. Not to age myself, but when I was eight and he was six, our parents were going to take us to see Return of the Jedi. My brother punched a classmate of his at school and got detention that day. My parents punished him by telling him he wasn't going with us to the movie and that we were going to take him to his aunts for the night. That first gif reminds of his exact response, except he continued to stomp down the hallway, slam the door shut and cry into his pillow until Aunt Karen came to pick him up. Seriously, that takes me back like you wouldn't believe!

Schwartz should have beat his cocky ass when he had the chance.

That is all.

I agree, but as soon as a QB acts like a runner regardless of read option or what formation they are running he loses his protection as a passer. Thats the way it has always been. QB's hand the ball off then fake like they have the ball sometimes and act like a runner...... can you hit them then too? It just seems like they are targeting a particular formation rather than the actual act of pretending to run. If a QB doesn't have the ball and is pretending too have it and pretending to run, I have no problem with it. But if he fakes the hand off from the shotgun formation and then doesn't act like he is running, they can still hit him from how I understand the rule. Maybe I am wrong.

If that's the rule, I agree. I'm almost positive this will only apply to quarterbacks who pretend to have the ball and run. It's split second and you can't worry about whether the quarterback did or didn't hand off the ball as he's running around you. It's free game to assume he has the ball if he's running.

I noticed RGIII last year would fake the run then stop and put his hands up to show he didn't have the ball on occasion to avoid being hit. I think once a QB does that he should be protected.

Schwartz is the biggest douchebag in the league not named Pete Carroll.

Schwartzy would have stomped a fuckin mudpuddle in Harbaugh's face and Harbaugh knew it. You could see that "Oh shit, he's not buying my act and I'm about to get my ass kicked." written all over his face.
