I've thought of that too, can the DE get there fast enough to just completely blow it up?

Doubt most DEs can get 6 yards in about a second. If the DE crashes the QB then its still 10 on 9 unless you drop both safeties and with the hole created by the DE unless your RB sucks you should get a 7 yards every time.

Not new.

:agree:
Football has changed a lot over the last couple of years. I remember the discussions when Dan Fouts was chucking the ball all over the place. People said it would not last because you need a good running game to win. Now you have Manning, Brady, Rodgers, Brees,..etc, that throw the ball and do not have a great running attack or a running attack at all.

Today it is the Pistol formation, which you can run your entire playbook out of, and people think it will be easy to stop. Look above, it was not easy to stop an all pass team, now you have guys like, Cam, RGIII, Wilson, Kap, all can run, but also have good arms and can burn a team that way. Look at College ball today, a lot of running QB's are being asked to throw the ball more, which means more QB's coming in the league with these talents.

I do not see it being stopped, but I do see it expanding and becoming a more used platform, and able to make better adjustments then the pure passing situations. DC's are on their heals on this one and could be for awhile. I expect in the next 4 to 5 years that scoring will be higher do to this new formation. It is much easier (and quicker) for an offense to make adjustments to defenses then the other way around.

The read option, pistol, etc. are warmed over offenses from years gone past.

Stop it...why? If I were a DC, I'd focus on the pitch man and let these QBs run it as much as they want. I'd much rather the QB beat me running the ball.

With the right athlete running it we've seen those offenses can work in the NFL...Most teams are going to face 2 or 3 teams with this type of offense at most so DCs don't put anything special in to stop it...a few tweaks is about all they do to adjust. Doesn't make me right, but I'm old school...I don't expect any offense that routinely uses the QB as a running playmaker will win a Super Bowl. IMO, the QB position in the NFL is a facilitator, not a playmaker.

RG3, he's already been nearly knocked silly vs ATL, and of course the knee...he's a dynamic player so you want to take advantage of that, but I just don't think you expose him unnecessarily.

No...I don't expect for them to go away because the college QBs are running these offenses more and more.

How do you stop the Pistol and the read option that is the new think in the NFL?

Hmmmmm I wonder where can one go to find out how to combat it.... Maybe every defensive coordinator in college football that stops it every week I think I might start there.

I think the read option will eventually go away but not this year or even next year. There is a reason this hasn't been a sustainable offense in the NFL before. You can't have your most valuable player putting himself at risk numerous times per game. It's just not a smart business move for owners to have the RGIII's of the league risking injury game in and game out.

The pistol will be around for awhile. We line up in it for most of our plays, but we only run the actual option play 15 to 20% of the time. This keeps the defense honest and keeps them guessing as to what is going to be run. Vick, Cam, Wilson, RGIII are too talented to make them one dimensional. You have to protect them the best you can, but you have to let their instincts take over and let them be themselves. The problem with all the years that the read option has not made it before is because the QB's were a run first player and did not have the passing ability to burn teams that committed to stop the run. This batch of QB's can hurt you if you are going all in to stop the option play.

Pretty sure they know that. It's not just about hurting the QB though, going after the QB as he hands the ball off will lead to big plays by the back.

NFL coaches know how to stop it, every coach in America knows how to stop it, it just comes down to personnel and execution just like every other "system".

The pistol offense will be here for a while. Some teams will match up better than others, but there is no secret potion that will stifle it league wide like the wildcat. These teams only run a handful of ZR plays a game, but line up in the pistol quite a bit more and run their normal plays out of it. Remember, these are run first teams that we are talking about, if DCs want to put all their eggs in one basket by focusing on and roughing up the QB, they got another thing coming.

I dunno...4 or 5 big runs by the tailback wont make a game..but bouncing your QB on his head 4 or 5 times will sure change yours

4 or 5 big runs wont decide a game? Are you serious? Coaches would disagree with you.

College defenses defend the option all the time, and they dont do it by just teeing off on the QB but by playing disciplined assignment ball.

Nice discussion about this on nfl total access yesterday. Some nice points about how hard it is for defenses because one blown assignment or mistake against a smart NFL qb with RO ability, boom, can be a big yds and TDs.

But D's do have some options to help contain the RO. What the Ravens did in the SB to help contain it effectively, including blitzing your LBs anytime they get in the redzone to force the QB to make faster decisions to avoid getting hit. Gaining any advantage of the D being able to dictate who is going to run the ball.

Will the read option be stopped? - NFL Videos

Wilson was better in the pocket than out of it last year. Look it up, across the board his numbers were better.

Kaepernick had the best Total QBR from the pocket. Believe it or not. Alex Smith was better than Wilson too.
