This morning Buster Olney was talking about possible suitors for Cole Hamels if the Phillies decide to pull the trigger. Olney said watch out for the Rangers because they have the pieces that Philly would want. He specifically mentioned Mike Olt as the key piece because the Phillies are very thin at 3b in their farm system.

There have been a ton of write ups about why this is highly unlikely. Mainly, Hamels is supposedly just a rental and the Dodgers are where he will end up as a FA. So why would Texas rent a few months of Hamels at the expense of what it would take to get here (rumored to start with Olt and Perez and build from there)? Texas would get no compensation when he leaves, it would be a true 3 month rental and then loss of everything.

only way i would do a deal for Hamels or Greinke would be if they agreed a multi-year extension or contract

I would only do it if 2/5 of the starting rotation continues to struggle by the trade deadline, and there would have to be an extension signed by Hamels. With Holland coming back healthy hopefully will be ok.

He was actually very good in his last rehab start until the sixth inning when he got tired.

This. Believe he gave up 3 homers in the 6th.

I read the report...but also read that the Rangers didnt want to give up Olt for Gio Gonzalez (whom they would control for more than 3 months). So you would think they wouldnt do it for a 3 month rental.

That said, seeing as how this may indeed be Hamilton's last season in Texas... the FO might go "all in" and try to win a championship this year.

Wouldnt surprise me really...

Holland is the one that I would dangle in a trade package.

Could TEX be talking to PHL about Carlos Ruiz as much as Hamels?

Remember last season TEX was talking to SDP ostensibly about Heath Bell ... and then turns out they acquired Mike Adams. And Ruiz contract has a club option for '13.

Part of the trades have been unloading Bourbon, I'm not thinking we would be in the mix for an OF'er if we are trading. They would be upgrades over the current Cruz we are fielding, but what is the cost of that upgrade?

I was thinking more about giving up Holland instead of Perez. No way I would give up both. As far as ballparks go, Philly isn't a lot better right now as far as heat and pitchability. There is also Greinke who has pitched well in both leagues.

I am with you on Holland as well. Perez in only 21 and has the upside. We have a few weeks yet to see how this plays out, Oswalt is not the answer and J.Grimm just is not ready to be a starter.

Would not surprise me as well because you start wondering about all these 30and over guys and are they starting to head into decline. We may be seeing it now with Young, Cruz, and perhaps Napoli.

There's no telling just how serious the Rangers are about trying to pry pitcher Zack Greinke from the Milwaukee Brewers at MLB's July 31 trade deadline, but evidence is mounting that the team is at least interested.

Fox Sports' Jon Paul Morosi tweeted Tuesday that the Brewers had sent a "special scout" to watch the Frisco RoughRiders, the Rangers' double-A affiliate which currently some of the organization's top prospects playing for it. Among the biggest names are shortstop Jurickson Profar, third baseman Mike Olt and pitchers Cody Buckel and Neil Ramirez.

Morosi, who wrote last week that the Rangers had been scouting both Greinke and Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels, said the Brewers' scout was "further evidence of Texas' interest in Greinke." He also followed up with a second tweet clarifying that the Brewers' scout was there for special reasons.

"To be clear, the Brewers have a special assignment scout watching Frisco," Morosi wrote. "I'm told this is not routine coverage."
