A few Mariner odds n ends prior to the series finale in San Diego
First and foremost:
The Mariners began the San Diego series against a 27-15 Padres team who boasted a 16-5 home record. The Mariners opened the series with starting pitchers Logan Evans and Sterling Hitchcock, two kids who were in AAA just a month ago. Jumping out to 2-0 series lead was about as improbable as it gets.

The Mariners are 11-9 against teams with a winning record, 14-10 against teams with a losing record. The most improbable series outcome we've played so far, other than the present series in San Diego, was getting swept at home by Toronto. It just doesn't compute. The only other time we were swept this year was very early in the season in San Francisco.

Moving on to the bullpen: where would this season be without Munoz, Speier, and Legumina. Speier's performance is not completely unexpected. He was pretty effective in 2023. But last year he was a trainwreck and at times I wanted to take him to the train station. Legumina is one feather that DiPopo can put in his hat. And I imagine that the Reds GM is kicking himself in the ass for letting him get away. Legs has been in 15 games so far and has only given up an earned in one game. That's one game, in Boston, April 23rd. And Munoz: how crazy is it that the guy has a 0.00 ERA and still has two blown saves? Speaking of that 0.00 ERA, has any Mariner pitcher ever opened the season with 20 innings and not allowing an earned run?

Month of May batting averages and slash marks
Well, Jorge has tanked in May but he was there when we needed him in April while JP, ARoz, and Fulio were floundering below the Mendoza line.
Meanwhile, so far in May:
Julio .298/.333/.474/.807 - we'd like to see his SLG higher but he is scoring runs so, I'm good.
ARoz .333/.451/.429/.880 - OBP is insane. Again, would like to see the SLG higher, but, I'll take it.
Cal ..310/.473/.714/1.187 - Johnny Bench/Roy Campanella clone. His agent is probably already realizing that DiPopo low-balled him on the contract extension.
Rowdy .263/.282/.605/.887 - he's becoming a legend. The Hispanic Bucky Jacobsen.

Back to back Excellent baseball games by the Seattle Mariners

The series is in their back pocket, but a win today for the sweep will make a huge statement, and make that plane ride later this evening much more enjoyable.

RICK RIZZS
There is a great story about Rick and his son in the Sunday Seattle Times "PACIFIC NW" insert. I had no idea what a sad situation he had dealt with for 2 over 2 decades. Who would have ever guessed what he was dealing with behind the scenes. :noidea:

I saw that but didn't read it. I might have to look it up and read it. Thanks.

Most runs allowed by King this season. M's chase him after 5.1 innings to take a 4 - 1 lead.

The turnaround of team batting has been impressive this year.

First 3 in the lineup are all 0-3 so far.

Offense has all came from the middle/bottom.
