OV record related matter - It has been a little heartbreaking for the broadcast team of Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin to know a number of the late season games are now national broadcasts and there is a real possibility of the record falling in one of those games. Even if not this year, the same will surely happen next year if OV is just a couple away from the record when this year ends.

Beninati, an outstanding and underappreciated play-by-play guy, and Laughlin, a loveable but hopeless "homer." have been the broadcast voice for OV's entire career. To be honest, Joe B was briefly and probably should be a national broadcast guy - his prose and wit are both outstanding. Laughlin has been the Caps color guy since freakin' 1990. He had heart surgery in February and has been out the last month+ but is hopefully back soon.

In any case, the NHL is going to allow them to record their call of those national games and archive that recording to game play. It won't be quite the same, but I'm sure Caps' fans will enjoy it and it's nice the NHL/broadcast networks are bending those contract rules for this to happen. Kudos, NHL.

So apparently Pascal LeClaire's daughters didn't believe he had ever faced Ovi, let alone being the one to give up goal 1 (and 2) so he reached out to the Caps to connect to Ovi to confirm. Not only did he confirm it, he agreed to send Pascal a Jersey.

At the end, the Caps are beating the Pens 4-3 with just a minute to go. Pens pull the goalie and have a faceoff in the offensive zone. Pens' win the faceoff and puck goes to Crosby. He just gives the puck up to Ovechkin and vacates allowing OV to skate to center and rifle it in the net. Ovechkin breaks the record on an empty nettery. The scorers and the NHL say fuck it and give Crosby an assist. The two greatest players of this century are both part of the record. Perfect ending!

That will be a lovely memory and a beautiful moment just before his arrest and the subsequent catastrophe as the police vehicle careens off the Rachel Carson Bridge and into the Allegheny River.
