There’s a trade rumor that Cardinals are willing to trade their closer Ryan Helsley to the Rangers for Osuna and Bratt.
Where did you read that? That sounds like a fairly cheap price, even as a rental.

I would rather sign Scott, but that sounds like a pretty good trade.

The Rangers are signing lefty reliever Hoby Milner to a one-year contract, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

Rumors have been surrounding a lot of Cardinals players getting new zip codes so they can do a rebuild...

Ryan Helsley to the Texas Rangers

  1. Ryan Helsley

Both Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported earlier this offseason that—despite St. Louis' stated plan of getting younger and building toward the future—the Cardinals are not expected to trade away closer Ryan Helsley unless they get an offer they simply cannot refuse.
The Rangers might be willing to make that offer, though, because they absolutely need the bullpen help after losing all of Kirby Yates, David Robertson, Andrew Chafin, José Leclerc and José Ureña as free agents.
With a payroll already north of $200M, the price tag on top free agents Tanner Scott and Carlos Estévez might not be doable for them.
Helsley, on the other hand, has a projected salary of $8.1M in his final year of arbitration eligibility, which is about half of what Scott's salary figures to be.
The two-time All-Star has a 1.83 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 12.1 K/9 since the start of 2022. Save for maybe Emmanuel Clase, he has been the best reliever in the game, and he could be headed for a huge contract next offseason if he delivers the goods again in 2025.
That part is a matter for another day, though. For now, he could be one heck of a one-year band-aid solution to the Rangers' need for a closer, which might be the missing link that makes them the AL West favorites and the top challenger to the Yankees in the American League.
He won't come cheap, but he's probably worth it.
The Trade: St. Louis sends RHP Ryan Helsley to Texas; Texas sends OF Alejandro Osuna and LHP Mitch Bratt to St. Louis

Adam Morris from Lone Star Ball let's his readers vote each offseason for the Rangers top prospects. Here is what they have done far.

Our list so far:

1 — Sebastian Walcott

2 — Kumar Rocker

3 — Alejandro Rosario

4 — Jack Leiter

5 — Emiliano Teodo

6 — Winston Santos

7 — Malcolm Moore

8 — Justin Foscue

9 — Alejandro Osuna

10 — Kohl Drake

11 — Brock Porter

12 — Jose Corniell

13 — Mitch Bratt

To me, his readers lose all credibility as a group by having Porter in the top 20, must less at number 11.

From Mark Feinsand:

Among the teams seeking help at first base are the Yankees, Mets, Mariners, Astros and D-backs, none of whom appears inclined to make Alonso the type of offer he’s seeking -- at least not right now. With Christian Walker, Paul Goldschmidt and Carlos Santana also available on the free-agent market and would-be trade candidates including Nathaniel Lowe, Josh Naylor and Yandy Díaz potentially in play, there are a number of options for teams to consider.

Isn't it about time the Rangers sign a closer and set-up man? It would make a great early Christmas present for the team and for the fans.

I'm in agreement but I am also good with a couple of set-up men and Gray as closer.

Yeah, I would be okay with that. I am just not sure the Rangers have that in mind, though. It could be that they see that as Plan B or C if they cannot sign someone un particular. It could also be that they want to keep Gray as an option in the rotation. When Bochy was interviewed a couple of weeks ago he mentioned Gray as a part of the rotation.

Signing Sasaki could change a lot of plans, but they really need to get the pen firmed up before Sasaki can sign.

They are hoping he rebounds to his 2023 form, I guess.
He fits a role we need IMO. Still need two more.
Funny I thought of Yordan but read he gave up a GS to him. Yikes
Wonder how much

I can see the need, I am just not sold on him doing well in that role.

He will get half of the usage of Latz for only selected situations I bet

It looks like Walker is about to sign with the Astros. That leaves one less 1B candidate to get in the way of a possible Lowe trade, and it is with a team the Rangers aren't likely to trade with.

If he pitches the way he did a couple of years ago, then that works. If he pitches like he has done most other years, I would rather have a better pitcher. As long as they are willing to cut him loose if he isn't what they hoped, I have no problem with it.

3 years 60 million. Comparable stats to Lowe except Walker hit more homers the last 2 years.

Bob Nightengale adds the Giants and the adds to the list if team in the market for a 1B.

Mets
Yankees
Diamondbacks
Mariners
Giants
Nationals

Three trade targets including Nathaniel Lowe, and two free agents remain the primary 1B who are available. That would seem to indicate there are six teams looking at five 1B.
