Why can’t these guys consult a PR rep before making statements like this?

I don’t even understand why he needed to use the NBA as an example.

They clearly have top guys from around the Globe.

“I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have world champion on their heads,” Lyles said, according to the Daily Mail. “World champion of what? The United States? Don’t get me wrong. I love the U.S. at times. But that ain’t the world.”

“We are the world. We have almost every country out here fighting and thriving and putting on a flag to show that they are represented. There ain’t no flags in the NBA,” he added.

He isn’t wrong. Could have worded it better.

But at the same time, Americans calling our domestic sports leagues champs “world champs” is a great example of why many around the globe think Americans are arrogant.

Any major International event can crown a world champ. Olympics FIBA Championships, etc.

NBA Finals is not that.

This isn’t a knock on the NBA as much as it is a knock on the culture of American ego.

It is the best players in the world scattered across 30 teams playing in the United States.

The World Championships is the best for each country competing against each other.

At least in the Champions Cup example they are competing across leagues from multiple countries. But even then, I don’t think they call there winners “world champ”.

That is reserved for the World Cup.

This isn’t anybody from another country crying.

It is an American track athlete correctly pointing out that American sports leagues are not in fact world championships.

Look up the definition of “world champ” and let me know what you find.

San Jose St. is a legit middie this year. That QB of theirs can play at a lot of P5 schools. They should be in the running to win their conference.

The game went about as I thought it would. The defense didn't look good on the first couple of drives. But settled and showed they should be better than last years...although that's not exactly a high bar.

They weren't really threatened, but there's a lot to yell at the players about...so the coaches are happy. lol

Yeah....the Spartans were decent last season if I remember right and look to be a lot better....as much as I hate y'all USC is a legit top 5 team IMO. And the Spartans hung with them for a minute before the Trojans talent just took over.

The NBA is an international league. Among people who work closely to the sport of basketball there’s no question that the NBA is the best professional league in the sport. Declaring the NBA champ World champion is absolutely a legitimate claim.

The Champions League is needed because there is debate from year to year which is the best European league and more importantly which league the best European team resides in. That’s not the case with the NBA. The NBA has no international rival.
