If you play two "National" Anthems. It is because you are playing it for two Nations.
So Playing two for one Nation is about the dumbest divisive thing you could do.
Realistically. A black National Anthem isnt even a real thing. There is the American National Anthem (for this country)

Sometimes when we were racing. If we raced up close to the canadian border we would have our National Anthem & the canadian National Anthem for those Racing from there or many fans coming from there to watch the race. But 2 National Anthems represented two different Nations.

There is no right or wrong in this, only a political stance. In today's climate, people are just looking for a reason to be pissed off. This is true of all political bents. With social media it is easy to find reasons to get pissed too. I have quit worrying about such shit. No more twitter, Facebook or Instagram, and amazingly enough I am able to navigate life just fine - and with less stress.
At the end of the day, who does it really hurt if there is one anthem, two anthems or no anthem. Seriously....this has no bearing on the game.

There was Whitney Houston at a Super Bowl during the Gulf War.

But, growing up in the 70s and 80s, if they did do any of that in the stadium, people watching tv didn't know it. We either saw Brent Musberger or Bryant Gumbel doing this pregame show. Then we went to the stadium for the kickoff.

This entire thing. Anthems. Kneeling of anthems. Showing all the anthem shit on tv.

Playing the national anthem before the game is also just "for profit business of" patriotism. No reason to play that song either.

So why the big backlash when they try to do another needless marketing ploy to a different base? They are only trying to "sell it", as you put it, because there is a demand from their customer base (and their workers) for it.

....and I could be wrong. But I am pretty sure it isnt going to start a race war in the stands like the writer of the article in the OP says will happen.

Our swim and tennis club used to do the anthem before swim meets. These were small town-based clubs and no, they weren't televised or anything, just an event for kids. Yeah, it was every-kid-gets-a-trophy level.

One year, we had a young girl on the team who was a very good singer. She did the anthem, and stunned everyone with how good her performance was.

Then she went out and won the individual medley.
