Game Thread: Play-In Tournament

I get why the Lakers fans are butthurt over it.

I don't. The play in tournament seems to be doing exactly what it was designed to do...maintain fan interest deeper into a season. There a total of 4 teams who were able to use the 9-10 play in spots. But there were several other teams who were in the running fairly late. That keeps the fans of those teams interested, plus it keeps fans of teams who may be looking at those games interested because their team may be playing one of them.

And all of that means more money for the league and teams. With a couple of tweaks, I could see if being a way to cut down on regular season games without really losing any revenue.

If the Lakers didn't want to be in it, they should have won a couple more games.

...except that the Lakers are the first 7 seed to be favored to win the first round in NBA history. Very well could've affected the championship.

To build excitement for the game and reduce the amount of tanking that goes on. And to give incentive for teams to fight to be a 5 or 6 seed rather than a 7 or 8 seed.

If 72 (or 82) games can't settle the playoff seeding, schedule fewer games and widen the playoffs. Don't half-ass it with this stupid play-in crap. The race was for 8th in both conferences, with the Lakers 3 games up and the Celtics 2 games up.

How exciting were most of these play-in games? Only the Lakers/Warriors. Anything involving the 9 and 10 seeds has been terrible so far.

Besides, who thinks the tanking problem is at the better end of the lottery? Those teams have a miniscule chance at moving up. Forget the draft, make all the rookies free agents and let the teams with cap space chase 'em (still limited to a finite number of choices like the original draft pick system). The best teams won't have much cap available anyway.

Completely agree. As I said upthread, Silver wants to do in season tournaments, along the lines of the cup tourneys in Euro football. I think it is a great idea. Even the tanking teams could get up for those games. And the top teams would likely ease back on those games as they focus on the title. Make the season 74 games and have an in season tournament.

IMO, the final 15-20 games of each season have always felt pointless for most teams. Other than 1 or 2 teams fighting for that last playoff spot, most teams were just going through the motions.

This year we have 15-20 teams that actually cared about those games that played hard right up till the last game, Clippers excluded obviously.

Kinda sucks for the 7 seed but ultimately if you don't want to be in the play in game, as you say, don't be the 7 seed.

They will only drop the number of regular season games if they have extra-season games like tournaments. The players won't agree to any more games in the season. So making the 82 games they play now matter more and thus get more fans is the only path to more money.
