To build excitement for the game and reduce the amount of tanking that goes on. And to give incentive for teams to fight to be a 5 or 6 seed rather than a 7 or 8 seed.

Exactly. I get why the Lakers fans are butthurt over it. But in a sport where only 3 or 4 teams ever have any real chance of winning the title, building other mechanisms for teams to get some excitement is worth it.

It's why Silver is looking to create in season cup tournaments. IMO, I'm all for that if that means fewer regular season games.

It gave his team a chance to make up a 3 game regular season deficit in the standings to gain a rung on the ladder. Ask the teams that are 7 seeds how they feel that, at best, can keep their place while risking injury.

Let's also see how he feels if they lose to the Grizz tonight...

...except that the Lakers are the first 7 seed to be favored to win the first round in NBA history. Very well could've affected the championship.
