Interesting discussion on the tube last night. Michael Felger was bitching about the Patriots not getting a top of the line QB and all indications are that they will not miove up in the draft and throw the future to do it.

Mike Florio threw a bucket of ice water on the show and said, that he knows that no one seems to care, but th e Boston media is one huge drawback when Boston teams are trying sign free agents. Talk about quiet!! He made a couple of valid points. First, the media pretty much across the country is made up of people that have never played any sports. They have no personal experience to draw from and yet they have the ears of millions of fans. Second, when they belittle a player's performance, it's an opinion that's presented as if it's fact. His best point was that the media has a huge platform to present their ideas and players' platforms are limited to social media.

We all forget that players in every sport are human beings and that they, like us, have feelings. We get upset when someone says that they don't want to play for the Patriots, but there are people out there who do not want to be mentally beaten to death every day and would rather play somewhere where every fart is not micrscopically examined by the media.

Ever wondered if a kid being interviewed at the combine has ever said to BB, "Don't draft me. I don't want to play in Boston."??

How can all indications point to anything when BB refuses to give indications?
I think that it's the way that others have interpreted what BB has said.

Apparently there's been a surprising turnout at the OTAs in Foxboro. Of course the locals are all over it. They weren't allowed access on Mionday, yesterday they took footage of both Cam and Stid throwing passes. looks like all of the TE and WR are there. Today is day three and reports are that even more players have shown up. Didn't say whether they were offense or defense.

BB has not addressed the press, but appears to be talking to some of them.

David Price agrees.

This is one of those things that's tough for me to pin down. On the one hand, it's hard to feel much if any empathy for people making millions. On the other hand, there is definitely some truth in what Florio is saying. It's why I never listen to or watch any of those sports talk shows, or read many articles about players' performances. They're being talked about or written by guys with literally zero experience in what they're discussing. "oh, so you played high school, football, hockey, baseball, whatever?" whoopty fucking doo...so did I. you have no idea what you're talking about!

yes, you'd hope these players would have some mental toughness to block this stuff out, but sometimes that's easier said than done...especially when you're talking about young men/women. as a 51 y/o, I'm at a mature point that I couldn't give less fucks what some person I've never met (or even ones I have) says about me. but can any of us say the same when you were in HS or even college? yes, that begins to change somewhere in the 20's or so, but I know I wasn't 100% immune yet at that age. it would be the same with these guys. but again, the best always have that mental toughness to block that shit out.

like the great Basil McRae once said, "50% of the game is mental and 50% is being mental." :thumb:

Maybe we just expect to much of 21 year old "pros", who haven't quite become pros.

I'm 71 and I have days, more than few to be sure, where my skin is thin. At 21, I think I may have been a hell of a lot less caring what people thought but I was in my third tour of Vietnam and I I didn't give much of a rat shit about anything. Other than my own ass. Everyone has their own definition of what "mental toughness' may be and sometimes that might just be outright rejection of everything and getting through each day.

Then again, why should that player have to live up to my or anyone else's expectations, other than his coach's??

First I don't believe most media types are addressing someone's mechanics are bad. They for the most part like us are saying what we see in their production when we are critical. Sure sometimes it could be schemes from a defender that have accounted for an offensive player not producing. Maybe a professional sees that more so then us HS/armchair athletes. But in most cases it's the players skills, motivation or mental toughness have suffered. Let's not sugarcoat this.

If there are those weak minded kuds out there that say no to NE because of the media good luck. I don't want them anyway. We've seen scores of players leave praising, NE, BB, and the media. Suck it up buttercup.

This concept is ridicules. Is Boston the only "media hotbed"? Boston vs KC, okay. Boston vs New York? Boston vs Philly?

I choose response-ability!

Response-Ability

https://medium.com/@stefangeorgi?source=post_page-----e2930e0aff81--------------------------------

.......from Stephen Covey, who wrote the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People…

And it’s the premise that, while we can’t control outside events…
Or even external stimuli in general.
We can control how we respond to those events and stimuli.
This is a uniquely human gift that we’ve been endowed with …
Because with response-ability comes a choice…
We get to CHOOSE how things affect us and our psyches.

Response-ability gives us an absurd degree of power…

Look at the word responsibility—“response-ability”—the ability to choose your response. Highly proactive people recognize that responsibility. They do not blame circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. Their behavior is a product of their own conscious choice, based on values, rather than a product of their conditions, based on feeling. | Optimize

Yeah it was pretty Gay when it first came out and was recently selected into Gay Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with most Bee Gee and Elton John songs

It's a good thing you didn't include my man Barry Manilow in your reply. I would have been very pissed.
Barry belongs there as well as ABBA, but we all are entitled to guilty pleasures. I'm also not sure if Elton belongs there... ABBA would be on my guilty pleasure list.
