When this is done itll be really cool. I seriously suggest patenting it if at all possible. For all you know you could contact the NHL with the formula and sell the patent. I am serious.

If I can perfect it, that's kind of part of the goal. But what I'm doing right now is a really basic-level equation. It would require a much larger data set to do what I really want to do. The Goalie Rating system I developed in the Swamp, however, I might submit to the NHL, as I think it's pretty solid.

What I really want to do with this, though, is find a way to assign at least offensive number values to players by working backwards from the salary equation. So an average offensive player would rate a 0, and then +'s and -'s assessed for values in a decimal system, kind of like that which is found in baseball.

So you basically want to making a "batting average" for forwards?

And the ex thing feels kind of strange. If she found it you dedicated a milestone to her that would be awkward.

can you make a new thread on the goalie formula for background? I don't remember seeing that in the swamp.
for part two, it will be really interesting to see who the 'ultimate average player' is.

I'm looking to go way deeper than batting average. There's an offensive value stat in baseball that considers numbers across the board - BA, OBP, Slug, OPS, walk rate, K rate, HR, RBI, XBH, etc. That's what I'm looking to create.

And as for the ex thing, I don't think she'd care. She enraged me by deciding that I am not only unworthy of dating her, but unworthy of even being a cordial acquaintance. And I am very justified in my anger, considering all the things I went out of my way to do for her even after she dumped me.

Bee invasion in Florida. Didn't the Padres have game delayed by bees last year, too?

I was planning on doing that once the season started up. It'll be really easy to keep track of after I make a spreadsheet with all the goalies in it. I'll only have to change 2 stats, and the rest will be equations based on those two. It should be pretty good. But I was just going to post the equation and then list the top ten goalies every week or something in the thread. So after this, I'll have value assessment statistics that are fairly telling for forwards and goalies. Defensemen will be tricky.

Thank you.

And I agree. I just don't swear. =) I mean, this new coldness is really out of character for her, and she was fantastic before we dated, while we dated, and until recently, even after we broke up, but some switch went off and made her suddenly evil.

Haha, perhaps I shall. She unfriended me on Facebook and responded with one word answers when I texted her a happy birthday, so I'm coming up with a "play dumb" plan to allow her to redeem herself with me. If she doesn't, so be it. But I promised her before we started dating that, even if we broke up, I would remain her friend, so as a man of my word, I will most certainly uphold my end of the bargain. If she refuses to hold up her end, then the deal's off. But I dated her for almost three years, and we broke up on decent terms, so it's illogical to me to stop being friends.

In other news, my new girlfriend is quite awesome. And before someone draws some unflattering conclusions, I've been broken up with my ex since last August, so don't judge. =P

Oh, and in case you were curious, puck, the Goalie Rating equation was:

1000*Sv%-50*GAA+10*(W/GP)+1.5^(0.1*(Sv/GP))

It actually returned pretty good data on the keepers last year and lined up really well with Vezina voting, so I felt vindicated.
