It's what everyone does now. Reading an entire interview is long and exhausting. Media in all verticals, especially sports likes to pick out singular quotes for clicks.
wow. Guess you coming to defense cannot be a surprise. Still need turnup to defend him for the triumvirate.

Thing is, @bksballer89 isn’t wrong.

You guys ever done an interview with media before? I have done a few. It isn’t easy.

In my case, since I am nobody, the reporter only used quotes that made sense and made me look good. In the case of a public figure it is often exactly the opposite.

Take 1 word out of that quote and the entire meaning changes. It was a word he shouldn’t have said, and I am sure he would take it back it’d he could have.

But you all are way overanalyzing a small piece of the man’s quote.
I spent 5 years as a reporter......

It's the exact quote that IS the issue. It's not one small piece. He said there would be an asterisk, a caveat. should have just left it at better team won.

Should there be an asterisk/caveat they didn't have to deal with his opponent having home court? Is there an asterisk/caveat because Indiana was without Sabonis for the entire series and Oladipo was banged up?

How? He said the Lakers won fair and square (which they did)
and added the asterisk/caveat.

Should there be one for your getting by Indiana without Sabonis the entire series and Oladipo hobbled? Did I miss Riles mentioning that?

Exactly.

1 line, really 1 word he shouldn’t have said.

I am sure he would even tell you that.

And while that is absolutely on him, you all are still over analyzing and making too much out of it.
If he would admit he should not have said it then how is too much being made when all that many are saying is it was sour grapes to say it?

they are...but this was not like most retirements. did come back the next year.

Point being, he played 0 games for the Bulls that year. It wasn’t an unlucky break that cost him to miss the series. He chose not to play all season.

I said he shouldn’t have said that. Pretty clearly in fact.

That's like Lebron saying that the reason the Cavs lost the NBA Finals in 2015 was because of injuries. Why mention it if it doesn't matter? He was using it as an excuse, pretty obvious

I don't think this is overanalyzed at all.

He used the wrong words and he was making an excuse. He probably knows he is wrong for what he said but he still said it. I'm not sure why some people are defending him like he didn't say it because he absolutely did.

That's the end of it.

Pat Riley's own words.

"But there will always be an asterisk; if we had Bam and Goran at 100 percent- Goran was our leading scorer [entering the Finals]- it might have gone seven games."

He said right there- there will always be an asterisk. And that's just lame. Imagine Steve Kerr using that line after last years Finals.

Now he's right that it probably would have gone seven if they were healthy. But they weren't. And that in no way diminishes what the Lakers accomplished. Riley's full of shit & sounds like a sore loser.

you did...then go on to make excuses for him. Pretty clearly, in fact.

Because I think it is really stupid when media does this. They create clickbait by focusing on whatever piece of a quote will create a reaction. Whether or not it captures the overall message they don’t care.

In this case the stakes are low. They are only talking about sports.

When they do this shit with more polarizing issues though?

That is one of the main reasons our country is so divided right now.

So call it what you want. This general practice of gotcha journalism makes me sick to my stomach.

There is this thing called cause and effect. Without the cause, there is no effect. In this case Riley's comment is the cause. Don't say it and there is no "clickbait"/effect.

Exactly. Everyone knows that the media does this. They are all looking for the "money quote".

If you don't give them a money quote, they have nothing to use. Everything Riley said was good. He just needed to stop before he said anything about an asterisk.

With all of the evidence we have of the media doing this, if you give them the quote, at this point, it's on you.

You would think that he of all people would know better considering the Heat spent the entire 4 years that Lebron was there fighting the asterisk narrative.
