Obviously Dwayne Haskins has been hit or miss so far this season. Some good, some bad. And that is to be expected out of a guy who has started fewer than 20 games since high school. So what we are looking for out of Haskins is improvement. That was the buzz word floating around all week- Riverboat wanted to see that Haskins was learning from his mistakes and improving. And I 100% agree with that line of thinking. We don't need him to be a world-beater quite yet, just make a couple fewer bad plays each week until the majority of the mistakes are gone. Pretty fair.

And before I go on, I can't shake this thought out of my head- when did we stop allowing QBs to develop? It's so weird that in today's NFL QBs are given the shortest rope ever to do the hardest job in the world. I feel like growing up we saw QBs struggle but they weren't benched or written off after 4 games. It was just part of the process. It was to be expected that a rookie or 2nd year QB would struggle in the pros. And even for another example, think about how long it took a guy like Joe Burrow to develop at the college level. Things just take time. You can't expect every QB to be great right away.

But anyway, back to Haskins' game yesterday. I pleasantly impressed with his decision making and quick throws. The gameplan was simple- don't force things, take your checkdowns, and keep the offense moving down the field. So that's how against a good Ravens defense he ended the day 32/45 (71%) for 314 yards. No TDs, but also no INTs. The Ravens start 2 All-Pro caliber corners, and Haskins didn't get in trouble with either of them. What more can you want from him???

What gets frustrating is the goal posts continually get pushed back by people who just want to hate Haskins no matter what. "All he did was dump the ball down to Gibson". I hate that line of thinking. Now you want to trash the QB for making the smart throw and allowing his RB to get YAC? Besides, that's not even true. Gibson has 4 catches and McKissic had 7…but Terry McLaurin had 10 catches on 14 targets.

Dwayne had 0 turnovers, which is huge. Turnovers lead to points, and Haskins protected the ball. Took 3 sacks, but on 1 his Oline left a man unblocked. Could he have adjusted the blocking presnap? I don't know enough about that particular play design, but I'm under the assumption he didn't expect his tackle to not block on the play.

Dwayne Haskins completed 71% of his throws, didn't turn the ball over, and went for over 300 yards vs the Ravens yesterday. Yes, there is more to work on. But he followed the gameplan perfectly, given the complete lack of number 2 WR options he is working with. Would we hate on Carolina for feeding Christian McCaffrey? Of course not, because getting the ball into the hands of your most dangerous weapon is a smart gameplan. Same goes for when Haskins utilizes Gibson and McKissic- both are great receivers who can pick up yards, it'd be dumb notto use them to open up the passing game.

So overall, I'm satisfied with the development we saw yesterday. He ain't Peyton Manning yet, but he showed improvement, and that's all we can ask for at this point. A little better every week, that's what we want. But god dammit it sucks he doesn't have another WR besides McLaurin. He needs another weapon so badly.

take heed IPFers

Something we haven’t addressed much (as fans) in terms of the points scored against us yesterday imo.

The secondary was super disappointing yesterday, especially safety play, sheesh...and I didn’t see the pressure I expected to see from our big guys up front. I get we are missing ionman and Chase but I didn’t expect to see nothing from players like RK etc.

Again, I don’t profess to understand what assignments are or what coverages are being used but I did expect better play from our D yesterday.

Some thoughts on your posts dad and Cali:

Those weren't so much dump downs. Anyone that says that doesn't know what they were watching. You saw the line get out to block for those screens. The Skins ran a lot of crossing routes too, slants. It was the game plan.
dad I remember you predicting stats before the season. I said he would throw more picks nd less completion percentage. Later I said I changed my mind. After reading about camp (and cutting AP) I thought they are going to throw under a lot. Good plan for a young QB. You coach to the abilities of your players right?
Haskins isn't a bust and won't be a bust. He may or may not be a star. Time will tell but one way or another he will be in the league for a long time.

QBs and short strings. With the growth of the media and so many people giving their opinions on TV, the radio and in print and the growth of the draft. The "Bust" became an in vogue word. Contracts for 1st year QBs went way you so if you weren't worth all the money you were getting paid then you were a bust and possibly a guy without a job. That is what happened to QBs learning on the job. How many Aaron Rodgers are around now and thank god for him that he was drafted later in the 1st round. It isn't fair but it is today's game.

Cali, I was thinking about the D today. I was really excited about JDR as the DC. Still am. But a bit disappointed. Anyhow, after hearing RR's presser today and RR saying how much he appreciates JDR helping him and stepping in when needed. I wondered to myself if that is hurting him coaching the D a little. Just a thought.

You want me to take the under. I think it will be over but I'll take it.
I get confused on the terminology sometimes. What I’m trying to say is that I’ll take the Skins +10 this week against the Rams.

I agree. Today’s game and franchises are looking for the next ‘generational’ QB. If a team has just a ‘guy’ who may become better than average...they cut bait and continue the search too soon. JMHO.

To be fair, there are a lot of ‘bridge just a guy’ QBs some years that can provide better immediate play than the young ins. I’ll leave it to those experts that understand today’s game way better than I about which strategy is sounder.

I tend to fall in the middle. Teams really don’t have the luxury of coddling a new QB for years, due to dollars, time, fan expectations etc. I mean what fan base is interested in tanking a FULL tear for R&D with no emphasis on winning. Why is winning and growth being trotted out as mutually exclusive? To me, a culture change includes a winning mentality followed up by the small things and actions on the field. So I dunno...

Great point about JDR and RRs Health. I’ve wondered that myself. Glad that I’m not the only one who was a bit disappointed.

The under is giving the points. +9 or better. You have the over +10 and everything after that.

It is what money did to the game. There won't be anymore Monte Coleman's or guys like him. You are trying to get better while you have guys on their first contracts. That is why five year plans do not really work. All these good players the Skins have Scary Terry, the DLine, possibly Haskins are all going to want to get paid. It is why you have to be careful with FA because if you spend too much on them you can't pay the guys you should. It also shortens guys careers. Who wants to pay a lot of money for a mediocre player.

Herm always said "you play the game to win." It is what I hope for ..... LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
