Wait, what?

8-2 in their last 10, and 5 straight wins after beating the Sharks tonight.

Is this team for real this year?

They certainly are leading a charmed existence so far that's for damn sure. They are getting unreal performances from their goaltending, even a rookie making his first NHL appearance tonight completely stole 2 points from the Sharks.

Still though, there is no way they are this good. They get outplayed in far too many games to be considered a contender in my eyes. They will likely come back to earth a bit after the X-mas break.

I think they will make the playoffs but not in first. They are too reliant on goalies at the moment, with both of them hovering around .930 SV% and 2.1 GAA, which are really, really good numbers for the season. They are third worst in the league in shot differential, giving up almost five more shots a game to the opposition than they take. Most importantly is their offense, which is pretty terrible at 23rd in the league in goals per game. Hell, 7% of their goals are shorthanded, and that's pretty much luck right there. And Harding just got hurt, so if it's bad they'll lose some games while he's out when Backstrom gets tired from carrying the team. I think they'll be alright because the Pacific will end up beating itself up and Edmonton's come crashing to a halt recently, but I doubt they end with one of the top four seeds. Probably Vancouver/Red Hawks/Pacific Winner/Black Wings/Wild is where I see this ending.

I think minnesota is definitely for real. Their defense is amazing and having D goes along way.

I haven't seen them play yet this year or know too much about them. But based on stuff I've heard and read, they are winning with great goaltending. I don't necessarily see any reason why that will change if the great goaltending is coming from 2 different goalies.

Could it be fair to say that their D deserves some credit for the impressive goaltending numbers? Like perhaps they allow a lot of shots but they are low percentage shots?

I wouldn't know as I don't tend to watch Wild games very often. Being the local team, they aren't available on GameCenter and I tend to be working at the same time they play, so they don't sync up well. I find it hard to believe that the shot types are so bad that they make up for a 5 shot deficit per game.

One thing that makes me more likely to believe in them, though: this is actually their third five game winning streak this year. It's no Boston, but that's impressive.

You do realize IPW was referring to the Leafs, right?
