fine. hockey speculation

Well, we had 16 teams make the playoffs in a 21 team league for about a 11 year stretch when the WHA folded back in '79. Not too much of a percentage change when 24 teams make the playoffs in a 31 team league.

Mirtle is tweeting the Leafs would take on Columbus in this 24 team proposed scenario.

There was a time when this would have been quite a show here on the hoop.

Did I mention that Oliver Bjorkstrand and Seth Jones are skating again?

I'm more intrigued - for obvious reasons - about how they're going to seed the 7 teams that don't make the POs. If they're going to do a 24 team PO in order to give some accommodation to teams who were trending up and may have gotten in, would they not reasonably have to do something for the draft order too?

Presumably the bottom 7 would be automatically the top 7 picks (not counting any trades of course), but I wonder if they'll still just lottery the top 3 or somehow come up with a formula to lottery all 7.

There's been a few potential formats for the lottery that have apparently been discussed:

1. All 31 teams are in the lottery but there is only one lottery spot and you can only move up 4 spots maximum.

2. Keep the same draft lottery format as last year with bottom 15 getting balls and there are again 3 spots up for grabs. This one seems to fly in the face of the 24 team playoff; several teams would have a shot at both the 1st overall and the Stanley Cup. That would be serious egg on the NHL's face.

3. Seven team lottery with 1st overall in play and nothing more.

4. Profit?

There have been half a dozen that I've seen so far.
Including carbomb's obligatory mea culpa

i see stephen johns mentioned it too .. what other current nhlers did?

Story in yahoo this morning:
It’s not for lack of trying, at least by some media members. Salim Valji, a Canadian sports writer, tweeted on Wednesday that he’s reached out to no fewer than six players, including superstars Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby, to ask about race and has been rejected every time.

On Wednesday afternoon, Dallas defenseman Stephen Johns quoted Aliu’s tweet and wrote, “We have to do more as a hockey community,” and a short time later Anaheim goalie Ryan Millertweeted the link to Aliu’s story and wrote, “I hope that we can all listen and be active participants in the change that is needed.”

The bar is low, but it was meaningful to see two current players acknowledge the problem. Johns and Miller can’t be the only ones, however.

It's that other part of the hockey culture, don't rock the boat or say anything controversial or you'll be punished.

It sure would be nice if more prominent NHL players spoke up, but it would also be nice if more NHL executives (general managers and owners) spoke up as well.

To a degree, I am sure some are afraid to take a stand because as soon as they do, someone will dig up some soundbite of them from some portion of their past to take out of context and come after them with pitchforks.

Or just make up lies to smear the star of their rival team.

It bugs me because I thought Akim played quite well in his short stint with the Flames - In my opinion, he certainly could have been a 3rd or 4th liner.
