it was like March 10th when he was still saying crazy shit like- well you can go to work if you have a little cough...i forget the exact words but it was totally crazy shit.

Wasnt he saying like there is 15 cases- thats not bad- soon theere will be 0, as late as early March. He was in total denial about the whole thing and more concerned about the politics that ran with it.

Only about 2 weeks ago did he actually start doing anything. He actually said to the American people- Everyone that wants a test can geta test- the tests are perfect- like the phone call was perfect--- and at that point practically no one could get a test and weeks later there are still huge shortages of tests.

while i get this is a very difficult situation he has bungled this and lied repeateadly. I dont think he does it out of meanness --i just think he was in denial about the seriousness for a long time.

It is currently late March, if he didn't take action until 2 weeks ago (which isn't correct), it wasn't late March yet.

And?

In late December it was also still being denied and/or downplayed by by the Chinese government and the world health organization.

When he put the travel bans in place, they were called an overreaction and racist. Now, people want to complain that he didn't act soon enough, even though he was the first to take any serious action.

Has he handled this perfectly? No, never said he did.

But people who want to put all of this on him are just trying to politicize it.
the first case in the US was January 20th.

as late as early March he was saying that the coronavirus was hoax perpetrated by Democrats to hurt him politically.

Oh, he definitely downplayed the importance of this and how contagious this virus is. Part of it is denial, yes. I think the one thing, and trojan pointed out that he's tried to ban travel to China (if I read that right), is the emphasis on travel bans. In St. Johns county where I live in, we were good up until we caught our first case last week, and it was because someone traveled from NY. From there on it spread and we now have 25 cases (last I checked yesterday morning).

Trump has never been a guy that's been an eloquent speaker; and sometimes he sounds like an uttering buffoon.
Trump's Statements About the Coronavirus

here is a "fact check" of quotes from the past 2 months.

it is positively unbelievable to read. It is simply bat shit crazy propaganda with no basis in science or fact.

here is the last one that they have- from MARCH 10TH

March 10: “And we’re prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away.” — Trump after meeting with Republican senators.

The fact that people are not criticizing the Chinese government as much is what has me baffled (well, 2nd to the fact that people are buying up paper towels and TP at mass quantities).

Same.

The Chinese government has handled this in exactly the same manner that they always handle everything.

First the covered it up. This may have been going on for a month or more before the whistleblowers started talking.

Then, when whistleblowers started speaking up, they punished them and denied the existence of it.

Then, when they could no longer deny it, they downplayed it.

During this time, their citizens were traveling all over the world and people were coming in and out of their country.

Then, they finally said "we have a problem".

There is now suspicion that they have stopped testing so that they can keep their number of confirmed cases down.

Yet, I've seen people actually suggest that they've done a good job handling this.

i dont know if they have done a "good job"---- but there response has certainly been effective in containing it. They had trucks and planes disinfecting whole cities and millions locked down in their houses- stuff that would never play in the US unless it got positively out of control.

Actually, it's been shown that he didn't actually claim the virus was a hoax. He claimed the Dems trying to pin it all on him was the hoax.

According to Johns Hopkins (there are a couple of experts there), the US was the most prepared for this.

i just dont think he realizes that people actually tune in to get real advice from a president duruing a crisis. You just cant say stupid fucking shit like- "everyone can get a test that wants them- and the tests are perfect"- - when in reality, ESPECIALLY at that time, it was just a completely false claim.

there is no room for bullshit and propaganda during a crisis and he just doesnt get that. The office of the President moves mountains with what he says and people take it seriously and he doesnst take seriously what comes out of his mouth.

when its not a crisis we can laugh it off. When it is a crisis it becomes downright dangerous.

According to Johns Hopkins (there are a couple of experts there), the US was the most prepared for this.
the US had the highest grade of readiness of any country because of its healthcare/bio-medical infrastructure but totally bungled it.

Thats why very soon (if not today) we will pass up China as the country with the most cases in the world.

We have the most advanced health care system and the best doctors in the world, we had months to take action, and it was totally bungled---- and very soon we will have the most cases in the world becuase of it--- DESPITE having the best infrastructure to handle it.

This may have started in China as early as November, maybe October. because of their cover up and denial, it's virtually impossible to know when this thing actually started.

It's also a hell of a lot easier for them to just lock down the country than it is here.

Yeah, you can believe China if you want. I don't. As I stated earlier, there is now suspicion that they aren't even testing people anymore.

Additionally, we have no idea how many cases there may have been that they never reported because they were covering it up and denying it.

We also have a lot more people and a lot more freedom than most other countries.

When you consider our freedoms to travel the world, how many people come in from other countries on a daily basis and how freely we move around this country...why would anyone be surprised that we would have more cases?

South Korea had arguably the best response of any country and they said that what they did would be impossible here.

Ding ding ding

Hence, why I always laugh when people mention China's numbers being lower than the US. They outnumber us 4:1/5:1 and their confirmed cases was at 81k at the start of the week and has since stayed there. With how that country is built; primarily their large cities, I highly doubt that all of a sudden, COVID-19 has completed stopped spreading.

And even if we were to give them the benefit of the doubt and 81k is accurate. It would likely only be accurate from the time they admitted there was a problem.

How many people were infected and never reported because they were covering it up and denying it?

I think it will eventually go away......once we have a vaccine......months from now.

But in terms of how Trump has worded things and his approach (from a public perception at least), it does look like he downplayed this. Where you won't get any arguments from me.

I don't think many, even Trump supporters, would say he didn't downplay it. But, he wasn't the only one who did.

I think we all know that Trump has a tendency to speak....shall we say....bombastically and in best case scenarios.

So, I think that some of his statements were attempts to reassure and provide hope and confidence.

But, because of how he speaks, it comes across as him not taking things seriously.

That's where I think the criticism of him is completely fair. He needed to "tone it down" and say things like "we have the best medical system in the world, we have our best doctors on this and I am confident that we will have things turned around sooner rather than later. In the meantime, please continue to follow the advice of Dr. Fauci and the experts that are working on this".

But, that's not how he talks so...

Who will be the first to defend Trump on this one?

Trump tells foxnews he doesn't think areas need 40,000 to 30,000 ventilators. New York currently has 39,000 covid-19 cases, and 450 have died

Disease Experts knew this would eventually get here. Why weren’t we doing more back then to stock up on test kits and ventilators?

China had it in their country earlier, but they also had no advance time to prepare. We did.
