Cap Space- what to spend it on.

From over the cap as of today they have the Seahawks at 50 million. Doesn't include the draft cost or injury fund. I could not find data for draft cost for this draft. I'd put draft cost at 6 million as a guess and injury fund...IDK 5 million maybe? Lets go less and say 5 million for the draft and 4 million for injury fund. That would leave the Seahawks at 41 million.


Clowney-Seem the majority thinks this is a must do. Cost? Here's the top ten DE for salaries.



Short is pulling down 20 million, scary thought isn't it? Think Clowney gets at least 20 million as the best DE on the market and could get more. So if the Seahawks land him at 20 million that leaves 21 million, and remember that does not include Olsen.

12 million sound in the ball park? Sounds like more then the Seahawks can afford, because once you deduct the 5-7 lets say 5 million for Olsen they are down to 15 million without that second pass rusher. Have 2 OL that are FAs that will have to be resigned. Crazy as it sounds word is Ifedi is going to get 10 million, not sure someone else on the market worth spit cost less. Then there is replacing the other FA OL
Iupati. At this point the Seahawks at best signs some journey man to compete with some rookie and they are tapped out with cap space. Yes they can cut guys like Dickson to save 3 mil and or Britt to save 8 mil but open up another hole that needs filled with salaries rising quickly.

Just wanted to point out that the cap space the Seahawks have isn't huge in todays market with the ridiculous salaries give out. Given the needs the Seahawks have it's actually very little. My reason for concerns about spending money on a luxury ( back up TE ) and not waiting until the real needs are met . I'm talking pass rushers and starting OL even if it's just resigning those we had last year or trying for something better ( we don't want just a body to fill the space , right?). Feel these two needs are hard to fill in the draft unless your drafting top ten and even then.

A lot will depend on whether we go after both Reed and Clowney. If we go after both of them, that will eat up a lot of our cap and we will still need to sign a bunch of players. I would be shocked if we don't restructured Wright and Britt and cut Dickson which will free up some cap space.

Of our FAs the following are guys I would like to see us resign.

Fant
Kendricks
Woods
Jefferson
King

and finally....... Ifedi. It pains me to say it but I really don't think we will find anyone better than Ifedi on the market and his replacement would likely be considerably worse.

So how much cap will it take to bring all those guys back? I feel like Clowney, Reed, Ifedi and Fant would take up 40 million on their own.

Spotrac has the cap at 209 million, over the cap at 200 million. That's the difference.

you are right but that is true for every team these numbers are just a starting point for fans. That number very well could be lower by 10% or more so 45 million or less not 50. The Hawks have a SHIT TON of work to do on the defense and even if you just look at "that single side" of the team ( Defense )you could easily spend that just signing your now FA that were on the team in 2019. The Hawks are VERY weak and VERY thin on Defense which sucks when you think about how they draft heavier on the defensive side almost every year. oof.

Since Pete has been here the team has drafted 51 defensive players and 45 offensive players. They have drafted 16 Defensive players the past 3 years and this is the issue. The misses the busts the poor drafting. This Scouting group and coaches need to hit on this draft and hit often because they have been striking out for far to long now on the side of the ball Pete is supposed to be the best in. 6 out of 10 drafts they picked more defensive players than offensive and 1 year it was tied at 4 picks on O and D. With that much put into the D you would expect better performance in both on field production and by the drafting of players.

The amount of cap space the Seahawks have isn't enough to fix the holes and some of those holes are hard to fix in the draft, especially give the late position the Seahawks have. OL and DL are positions best filled if possible thru FAs IMO and that is going to be difficult given the cost of those players vs cap space available.
I'm at the point of saying it's not going to be likely Clowney gets resigned to the Seahawk, not at a cost of 20 million plus per year. Not with all the positions that need filling. I don't want to sound like a debbie downer here, could be not signing Clowney works out for the best. Maybe the player they sign to take his place works out just great. I guess I just want to drive home that the cap space is not actually great, hard choices are going to have to be made. Signing Olsen before addressing more urgent needs seems impulsive and I'm not a fan of spending money in that fashion. Priorities need to be made and then go down the list and make the signings in order of said priorities. Back up TE is way the hell down on that list.

it isn't about consistency it's about getting it right at least some of the time. They haven't done that as of late. Matter of fact in one of the threads i linked a article that showed just how bad the Hawks have been in drafting the past 4 or so years. Worst in the NFL. yeah but hey We got Dissly Last year and Metcalf this year. Both offensive players and Dissly can't stay healthy so doesn't help the Hawks defense but maybe they are not the worst now. The Article was wrote in 2018, i think i posted it in "is it to early to talk about the draft" thread lol.

Seahawks have not been stellar with their top picks to be sure. I honestly feel that the effect of their draft position as much as anything. Patriots are another team that like the Seahawks pick towards the end of rounds and like the Seahawks have not fared well with that draft position. Thinking of another team that has had to draft towards the end of rounds and the Bronco's come to mind. Think they also have had their share of whiffs. It's just really hard having to be hind titty in the draft. Somehow the Seahawks have maintain a level of competitive contender despite those misses so maybe not as bad as seen by fans? However a stellar draft could do wonders for the roster. Been a while since they have had one , so maybe the odds say they are due? All we can do is hope.

Future cap space is a another subject. I'm mostly addressing those that feel the Seahawks are flushed with cap space this season. They aren't, not at the salaries being handed out and the holes that need addressing. Clowney and his salary is a this year cap problem, dang hard to pay him market price and still address other needed signings. That just the reality of the situation. One way or another the Seahawks need to add or resign two OL and don't think that will be cheap. One way or another Reed will have to be resigned or replace, again not cheap. Plenty of other position to be addressed in the draft. LBs, RBs the secondary. Seahawks need some off season magic to happen. Don't take that to mean I'm down on the Seahawks, rather I just want to high light the difficulty of the challenge they face. It's not going to be easy, the assets aren't as great as fans perceive.

Griffin will probably be looking at a 3 year 30-35 million deal 10-15 guaranteed. It'll probably be backloaded due to age, effectively making it a 2 year 25 million deal (assuming $15 signing bonus). So, his first season cap hit should come in around $10 million.

Clowney, if he gets the $24 million I've been hearing, will probably get 50 guaranteed, though not a huge signing bonus. So 5 year, 120 million. Again backloaded, in this case because everyone is backloaded for the most part . Assume his first year cap will be $20 million and final year around 28 million.

So, if both are signed, I would think their 2020 cap impact would be around $30-35 million, leaving Seattle with 15-20 million to fill other holes (assuming 10-11 million in rookie/injury cap).

With out quibbling about the # of players needed, they are not going to be able to sign that many players with out dumpster diving for FAs. Think we are looking at a 2 year project. Be best if players signed have a future beyond the immediate season or two. Signing players who's future is a one year thing, just makes next year the same situation, where there are too many holes to fill in one off season.
The draft is going to really matter. Seahawks don't have premium picks but at least some quantity.



All those picks come near the tail end of every round, which kind of sucks, but they got to make it work with some passed over gems

LJ Collier is not out of the question either... We still have our #1 pick coming back for a 2nd season in where he will see more playing time... R. Green saw progress last year as well... One of those guys will be our #2 DE...
