Our PC is over 10 years old and on it's way out. I'd like to replace it with a Mac, but I'm not exactly sure which one. We don't game or anything. The wife will use it to store pictures, do her Shutterfly stuff and other things that our ipads can't do.

Any info or insight will most likely be appreciated.

When you factor in quality they are priced right around PCs in their range. You can get a lot more for a lot cheaper as far as specs go with a PC obviously, but it won’t hold up nearly as well or as long, in my experience.

If you are doing production graphics or video editing maybe.

For storing pictures, shutterfly, web surfing? Gtfooh

Good friend of mine always has both. Guess which one he's had more issues with and more hassles when he has to go to the genius bar or whatever they call that nonsense.

PC has issues, get replacements anywhere from anyone and replace rather easily. Mac issues bend over and open your wallet wide.

Yeah, the only Mac I have is 10 years old, so I don’t know about the new ones since they started putting all those new ‘features’ on them. Does sound like they’re trending the wrong way with all that stuff and longevity. It’s too bad.

They have their place, just saying there may be other better options based on needs.

I work for a major hospital system and while we have over 5,000 PC's and laptops, we have zero mac machines. Big part of that is we get same day onsite warranty service for the PC's. No chance you get that with mac. That and software compatibility issues.

We do however only use iPads and iPhones because of their ease of use and durability.

So I can't really help OP. I refuse to work on macs.

Outside of the difference in how the OS works, which will have some growing pains making the change. Mac limits hardware that can be used. This is great eliminating issues as all software only has to be written for so many hardware variables, but it is also the reason that the prices are jacked up so high.

Do you have a desk for it to live or are you looking for a laptop?

If you don't need a massive screen, the 21.5 inch iMac is a good choice. Make sure its the 4K display model.

I'm using the original 27" 5K iMac from 2014. Still powerful enough to run everything I need every day(VMs, Docker, ... other nerdy shit)

Though it looks like they're nearing the end of cycle, so it might be worth waiting.

bowser can't be updated here…

can one take an old macbook pro, have it cleansed professionally and reloaded with updated OS and browser?

if so, how much would that cost me?

@WizardHawk ?
In general Mac's are upgradeable to newer versions if their OS. A quick Google of your model will tell you if yours can use the most current, or if not, which is the highest.

As for price to fully refresh the OS that depends on where you take it. An official Apple support location will charge you more than an independent shop. You will have to do some calling around to shops in your area to see what their prices are.

If you are talking about wiping it and putting a clean OS on it, it shouldn't be that expensive.

thank you good sir.

this macbook pro is about 12- 15 years old…always comes down to outdated technology fixes vs. buying a up-to-date technology. Besides, i'm a cheap bastard who loves to get 400K miles out of his cars instead of getting newer ones.

probably should just toss this puter into the garbage and never look back at puters again.

My experience with macs is ppppffffffttttttt!!! Not impressed.

My desktop is a Dell Precision tower 5810. Real decent specs and got it off ebay for 375 delivered.

These types aren't purchased per se. They are leased by big companies and when off lease whoever has some kinda deal(I guess) with said company picks em up, cleans em out and reinstalls windows. I hear so much about macs being great for vid editing and the such but this workhorse I have can do anything and really not break a sweat.

Mac = "LOOK AT ME LOOK I'M TRENDY AND COOL AND HIP MAC APPLE YAY STEVE JOBS!" *blows $4K on a 'high end' Mac desktop*
PC = *hold my beer while blowing $1.5K on a desktop that performs better and can be easily upgraded*

Mac makes an okay product, but they WAAAAAY overcharge, and there's not really any exclusive apps these days that Windows doesn't have something highly similar for.

For years about ALL the Apple dorks could argue is: "Apple has better sound/recording software!!!!" No... they don't. There's a reason almost all professional sound studios have Windows/Mac because artists use (dedicated) BOTH. Windows caught up.

Build your own PC, and save THOUSANDS and get one that shits all over a Mac performance wise. It's about as simple as building a Lego set these days. Oh the other great thing? PCs are like Japanese made cars, if something breaks you can throw anything in em' and they'll work. Macs are like European made cars. GOTTA be their parts, and you'll pay out the ass for it. That said, unlike European cars where performance/parts may be better, that is NOT the case with Apple. PLENTY of PC RAM/mobos/etc. are FAR superior. BMW/Ferrari/etc. you pay for BRAND AND performance. Mac you're paying just for brand.

So if you want to throw your dick on the table and be an attention whore while wasting money, buy a Mac. It depends on your job in this regard.. because if you are real estate/consulting etc., if you bust out an IPAD it tells your Client you're successful because you can waste money.

If you want something that works better, while saving thousands, and don't need to brag about your 'cool and hip electronics!" buy a PC.

to be serious for a minute.

I was told that the price difference is worth it because the Macs are that much more secure from viruses. i have no idea how true that is. p0rn is p0rn and viruses happen.

My middle daughter has a MacBook she uses for school. Around Christmas, she picked up her laptop, but left a headset plugged in that got caught on something and then shot forward and hit the screen when it dislodged. The computer was four months old, but that issue not covered. Cost to fix $500.
