Off to the NBA.

Ya know, kids these days.

You give them $50,000 and give their dad a Mercedes and fight the NCAA to get you eligible, and they turn around and walk out on you anyway...

:dhd:

Little Penny is off to a great start.

Maybe he should have spent the year working at GameStop instead??

Might have been more fun and interesting for him.

Kids should be allowed to go straight to the NBA if they want to. The players association needs to change their thinking on one and done.

I think if you can't take a little joking around, you're definitely on the wrong forum...

But feel free to keep cursing me out...

Okay, sorry for cussing. But, the only person or entity that is without fault in this situation, IMO, is James Wiseman.

The NCAA has effectively told the top players in high school basketball that they are not welcome. Out of the top 5 projected players in the 2020 draft, only one is playing, and it would appear that there will be none in the NCAA tournament. If they had suspended Wiseman for only 6 games or so, he would probably not have made the same decision to drop out and sign an agent.

Penny Hardaway is at fault also. He should have known better, but to call him a booster for making a donation 10 years ago is petty. He should have known the rules, but it seems that he didn't. Ignorance is not an excuse.

The U of M is also at fault for letting Wiseman play the 3 games he played. College eligibility is always ultimately at the discretion of the University president. Had Dr. Rudd ruled him ineligible when notified by the NCAA he probably would have had a worst a nine game suspension and would have been eligible for the game last Saturday in Knoxville.

No biggie.

I'll be honest here.

I really don't fault Hardaway and Memphis so much as Wiseman himself.

I mean the kid has a chance to put this team on his back and make them a title contender in a weak year. Doesn't he have any competitive fire?

It's to the point where kids don't want to be playing college basketball ... at all. So I agree, let them go pro. It's better than the sham of trying to pad their stats and avoid injury for 5 months while waiting for the NBA draft process.

I promise you it's not lack of competitive fire that's keeping him from playing. The only thing he would have to play for is a deep run in the NCAA tournament. He's not going to improve his draft position, but he could hurt it. I'm guessing Cole Anthony is not going to play anymore this year, either. I wouldn't be surprised if Anthony Edwards doesn't play much longer also.

NCAA basketball fans are the ones missing out, but with what has happened with Zion Williamson and Cole Anthony getting injured I think scares these top players. There's 10's of millions of dollars at stake.

Exactly. That means nothing to him.

I mean, why are we playing these games? Are you ONLY in college to raise your stock for the NBA? These kids think that says nothing about what kind of NBA players they will be?

If a kid doesn't have the competitive fire to drive a team of his friends (and they are friends on the college level) to a realistic shot to the Final 4 and title, do I want spend a Top 3 pick on him?

I know I don't...

Kinda wish kids in this position would just spend their year in Europe so we can avoid these distractions.

It's Memphis.

About 8 or 9 years ago, Derek Rose got a scholarship offer and agreed to attend the University of Illinois.

But then he refused to submit his ACT score and his high school transcript. Was told without them he would not be accepted into the university.

"Hello Memphis, this is Derek Rose, I have always dreamed of playing for the Tigers. I'll be arriving tomorrow, please send directions, you are in Tennessee, correct? Let's have a great season". Final Four and on to the NBA.

The best part of Derrick Rose's college career was at the Free Throw line.

That's not entirely correct. It was WWW and Calipari that got Rose to Memphis. Memphis was always high on his list, and he never committed to Illinois. Illinois was not going to give him a shot to play for a NC or be the first pick in the draft.

Partially true...Rose wouldn't have choked away a championship at Illinois. Draft status would have had very little impact.

You are correct. A little more research shows that when he would not release his SAT scores (which as it turns out were bogus anyway because some one took them for him) Illinois , while heavily recruiting the home state Mr. Basketball did not offer a scholarship. Memphis by the way forfeited many of the games which they won with Rose , because of the SAT issue.
But in the aftermath of the discussion regardless of who took the SAT, between you, me, and Rose only Rose will wake up tomorrow a multi, multi , multi millionaire with multi generational wealth. I should have been an NBA player, what was I thinking.

The NCAA never, I repeat, never, offered any proof that Rose did not report a correct SAT score. NEVER. They cleared hin for eligibility FIVE times. The NCAA also made Andre Allen ineligible for the Final Four for a failed drug test. Did they test Arthur and Chalmers? They both failed drug tests at the NBA combine.

Meanwhile, Arthur never graduated from high school (the NCAA had proof, not speculation), NEVER, but he was eligible? The NCAA is never biased, especially when they were based in Lawrence, KS.
