Bryson DeChambeau criticized by fellow pros for slow play at Northern Trust - CNN\

I don't condone slow play but I don't get what is going on here. You are either playing by the rules or you are not.

It's almost as if the PGA tour is trying to fix a problem by trying to shame players into doing what they want
instead of enforcing existing rules or to make a new one.

It's like they don't want the hassle of putting guys on the clock and penalizing players. So the ramp up the rhetoric and get some help with the Networks to apply some pressure by interviewing guys on the subject.

Bryson is one of the real interesting guys on the tour and is not in any way deserving of the heat he is getting for doing nothing other than playing by the rules.

He seems like a good guy, but if multiple fellow competitors have gone public with complaints about his slow play he probably needs to his up the pace.

But that is the issue for me ...He is out there playing within the parameters of the rules and somehow is getting publicly shamed for it. There had to a numbers of ways to address this in house.

The PGA tour has made slow play a real issue they want fixed. And I'm thinking it was no accident that the networks have gotten some PGA tour players to chime in for the cause.

Like everything else these days ..it's not the issue itself, it's how it's being handled.

When that many players come out against you, you're slow...there's no sugarcoating it.

While I think he is a slower than normal player, but as you say with no written guidelines as to what exactly is considered slow play he is being roasted without legit cause.

Different but reminds me of MLB turning on the roid users...they had no roid policy essentially since they were not testing for it.

The PGAT is turning on DeChambeau when they really don't have a policy that he's violating.

I might have to disagree with you on the nice guy thing Waz.
Everyone on tour seems like a good guy, but what happens when faced with controversy.
He is lashing out at everyone else.

Kevin Na owned it. Told the world he has a problem and is desperately trying to fix it.
He made a lot of fans as a result.

Bryson's team better get a hold of this quick and school him on how to handle this sort of thing.
Blaming other players and caddies is just about the worst thing he could do.

I agree that he could've handled it better. What's interesting is just what @R.J. MacReady was speaking on.

Even if he was owning it more like Na did...if there is no standard for pace of play that a player must adhere to, how can he really improve his pace of play to meet it?

While I don't blame the players lashing out at Bryson, it's really on the tour to establish some guide lines AND enforce them on all players. Koepka and others should not be having to call out a fellow playing competitor.

Agreed.

His slow play is not his fault. The tour is to blame.

His reactions by blaming everyone else is.

One thing I overlooked that makes this even more complicated. There is no time rule for a single player. It's for the entire group.

If the group is behind, than the group gets put on the clock. Every player in the group has to hit within a certain amount of time until the group is back to a well spaced position on the course.

Exactly, the tour needs to establish guidelines and start enforcing it....imo after the 1st warning, each player should be on the shot clock, and the offending player gets docked after violating the shot clock the 2nd time.

It's a sensitive matter even at the recreation level. One of our regular threesome...good player, nice guy and all that, but he's slow. It eventually got to a point that he asked what is so slow about his game.

It gave us a chance to put some tangible stuff on the table...at the end of the conversation...we had pointed out numerous times when he had honors on the box, he's not anywhere near ready. No glove on was a consistent one...he starts putting his glove on AFTER he's picked the club....often times having to go back to the cart to get it. Another one...if it's a par 3, and it's not your honor, one of us will laser the flag for the group...this player apparently doesn't trust our yardage or he needs "other" yardages because he routinely would still shoot his own laser after being told the yardage...these things are small, waiting until it's his turn to putt to view the opposite side of the hole...these things only take 2 or 3 mins extra...but over the course of 18 holes...it adds up.

Bottom line...do what you can while it's not your turn...be ready to play when it is your turn.

Now that he understands what make him slow, we've seen a huge improvement.

Right now DeChambeau has nothing to adhere to other than other players saying he's slow.

In agreement completely.
Again, the slow play by Bryson is not his fault.
His reactions were childish.

About your buddy situation.
Kudos to everyone for looking at solutions.
2-3 minutes is huge.

15 minutes a hole means 4:30 for 18. Still too much.

20 minutes a hole means 6 hour round.

Gotta have folks strive for 13 minutes max per hole.
If you have a bad hole, honor system is out.
Ready golf. Until you catch up.

I think in the spirit of the game Bryson’s pace of play is on him...just because there’s no official clock on you from shot to shot doesn’t mean you can take as much time as you want as long as the group isn’t bit on the clock.

At the same time, the tour can’t really come down on him because they haven’t defined slow play...so that’s really why other players are bringing it to the forefront in hopes that an official policy can be put in place.

On the buddy...his biggest fault was the little stuff. It’s really good that he he asked about it because something as simple as the glove thing, he had no clue that was taking nearly a min...totally unnecessarily...cleaned it up nicely...our last round was 3:45 on a Say. Morning.

At the recreational level there's also the slow dude who fires a 75 and a slow dude who can't break 90.

Big difference in 20 more slow shots having to be executed.

Yeah but the slow 75 is probably more annoying...my cousin is not really new to golf, but doesn't play much...95-105 is what he will shoot on a given day...he and I can play 18 in a little over 3 hrs and have fun.

Oh yeah of course a 90s player can play fast, I'm just a little more tolerant if I'm facing 20 less swings and all the prep for them.

Yep...that could be (actually is) part of his problem...there's not much prep...:D

The slow 75 would frustrate me even more because he's not looking for balls or trying to figure out how to get out of trouble very often...he's most likely just slow with everything.

I almost never play with a tee time after 6:30 am. All of the early guys that play this course in Queens know how important pace is. It's why we are all there that early.

And yes, I'm the low 90's guy but the last person that would hold up the group. i'm always the guy looking back at the tee box to see if guys are waiting. My high score is all short game issues so it's not a big time sink.

And I might add we somewhat unconsciously stopped taking the pin out. It really has a big affect on "ready golf" with guys knowing the pin is not coming and they just hit and go.

(My disgust with this new rule at the pro level not withstanding)

Yeah...every now and then we'll run into a group out early on a Saturday that probably should've booked a 3 or 4p time. For the most part the early risers are regular players and conscious of pace of play.

It occurred to me that they're reticent to put in rules about slow play but they just reduced the amount of time that I may search for my ball from 5 to 3 minutes.

....but then after I find it, I may stand over the ball without hitting it for 5 minutes!

Go figure...unless players take it upon themselves to speed up, nothing will happen.

Ironically they said on Golf Channel that Bryson is one of the faster players clocked on tour only taking 30 seconds on average to hit.
