I said damaged goods because he missed most of the second half of last season

He missed half his starts. It happens. 6 maybe 7 starts. He had already played in Boston for over a year and a half. I don't like his remaining contract, but the I don't think any player is worth that money. He's Top 5 AL but not #1 IMO.

I think that is balanced by Sale's low BB rate. He doesn't go deep in counts. A power pitcher with suspect control(Randy Johnson) would be better served going to contact but a guy whose K/BB rate is the best in history would not, IMO.
I think I've seen Chris Sale implode more than Randy Johnson, and Sale's only been around about half as long as Johnson's career thus far.
So if a high rate of Ks by a reliever is a good thing why don't all teams have a reliever that strikes out 2 per inning?
Most teams try to have a closer who can do this. Because the idea is not to put the ball into play. It works great, so why not do that the entire game? The answer is that the closer only goes for about an inning and frequently is out of rhythm if it's not a save situation.

The bulk of most teams' bullpens aren't high heat closers though. It's 1-2 guys like that, and then a bunch of situational guys who are better at handling baserunners, throwing to left-handed batters, etc. When I was a kid, there was a type of pitcher called a "long reliever" who could be expected to go 4-5 innings, if necessary, usually because the starter got into trouble early.

no, i work in thermal flux and theory in materials sciences tho. most of my work ends up space. i do a lot of TVAC testing for space companies.

I can see how that makes you an expert on starting pitching. You should have said that from the start.

Agreed. Top 5 AL starter is about who he is.

Maybe I chose the wrong term. I seem to recall him breaking down late every summer. And if I recall, he's been awful in the playoffs every year with Boston.

Maybe damaged goods was the wrong term. But there is a term.

He definitely wears out, and he has been shit in the postseason, but over the last two plus seasons he's given the Red Sox 450+ innings of 2.74 ERA ball.

Damaged goods was the wrong term.

My grandson works at a casino in a place called Cripple Creek. Out in Colorado, I think.

So sorry to offend you, jerkoff. What- I'm imagining that Yankees and Red Sox fans don't vote a thousand times each and screw over the better players every year's ASG?

Amused is not synonymous with offended.

I believe it was John McGraw who once told one of his pitchers to not try to strike out every batter. He said something like, "the whole point of having a defense behind you is to make your job easier"

John McGraw doesn't sound like the name of a man who built flux capacitors for a living.

I doubt he said that to Christy Matthewson

For all those that think 10 starts is too small a sample, how can you take 4 starts as a valid sample?

Unless I've misunderstood something, I don't think anyone is saying that 10 starts isn't a reasonable sample size OR that 4 starts is.

It's that he's got 14 starts on the season, so lets look at all of them. If you have to ignore nearly 30% of a guy's season in order to favorably compare him to the elite pitchers thus far, you're cherry picking.

No one is suggesting that Sale is the 8.50 ERA pitcher that he was over his first four starts, but they shouldn't be ignored if we're comparing them in the context of ASG selection/starts, which is where this started.
