Is the finish on the Express model so bad that I might as well get the Marine model? I keep seeing nothing but bad reviews on the rust issue and the cost to have it refinished is close to the price difference between the two models.

I've had an 870 express for about 16 or 17 years and yes, there is a little rust on it, but I chalk that up to my negligence. I didn't keep it clean like I should have and even left it outside one night. It is very minor though. I don't have a problem with it. Give me a sec and I'll see if I can get a good pic of it.

Hmmm, that's roughly around the time most people from my research said the quality dropped off (around 2000). I'm kind of hoping you're right that it's not a big deal and the people who had a bad experience are more likely to chirp about it. I'd like to be able to get an Express and modify it quite a bit for the lower price tag if I can. If I went with the Marine I'd probably just upgrade the stock, trigger, and add a sidesaddle. If I went with the Express I'd probably be inclined to take it a bit further over time.

Another alternative I've come up with is finding a cheap used 870 Police model and sending it into Wilson Combat for their Remington Steal upgrade.

I have owned many Remington long guns in my life. The Express is a nice "entry level" model. But with any model, you gotta take care of them. I was always a big fan of the Wingmaster models

I had a Rem 870 for years, never any problems, no rust issues at all. Gave the gun to my brother about 6 years ago, he has not had any issues with it.

I still have a set of 870 shotguns in the Wingmaster class. I am partial but I think they are great shotguns. I also had a .308 rifle pump action. I sold it about a year ago

Have a 870 and 1100 that have had for years with no problem.

As long as you don't store in salt water you should be good. I would only get the marine if you like the looks better.

I'm kind of leaning towards a cheap used Police model and sending it in here:

Shotgun Customization - Wilson Combat

That will give me the upgraded internal parts of a Police, the treated metal, and a better overall gun than a basic new one.

Have never shot one but the articles I have read spoke highly of the mods. Out of curiosity do they charge for that? At work the IP nannies won't let me see it.

My 1100 is a skeet grade model. Excellent wood and finishing. I was lucky enough to pick up at a pawn shop that did not know what they had a few years ago for $150.

Just the basic upgrade is $230 + shipping costs.

I bought a mount many years ago and mounted the 870 under the barrel of an AR-15. short barrel and extended tube , you could put 6 or 7 12 Ga buckshot in it. quite impressive, but quite heavy and clumsy

You also may choose to pimp-out your shotgun with a durable Cerakote protective coating.

I think the Cerakote is interesting and I might do it to my pistol after I put a red dot on it.

For a little more than a new express, look into a used Wingmaster. I picked up a like-new 1956 Wingmaster and it is a perfect shotgun. I know of a very nice used Wingmaster that I'm lusting after, but its in 16 guage so that is holding me back.

Too late unfortunately. I bought a used police model off of GunBroker and I will be picking it up from the FFL next week. I will be sending it into Wilson Combat soonish to have it refurbished once I work out exactly what I want. I'm pretty settled on a new sidesaddle, 2 round extended tube, and a ghost ring sight set. I may get the Armor Tuff coating but I'm kind of undecided about that right now.
