I cringe every time I hear these pompous idiots on the Golf Channel call him that. He's "Arnold" or "Arnie" or simply Arnold Palmer.

Yup. He’s in that rare class of single name fame when being referred to. In no particular order:

Tiger
Phil
Arnie
Jack
Seve
Sammy
Player
Watson
Hogen
Byron
Trevino
Rory
DJ

Zooky

I make chunk plays.

Yeah, I hear you, but "cringing"?

They were just trying to show respect I assume. I had a chance to see the King at the Masters, but never have had the good fortune of being in his close presence. I have been in the close presence of Jack Nicklaus before and I called him Mr. Nicklaus when I shook his hand.

I called him "Babe" and smacked him of the ass.

Seems phony and elitist to me. Its just golf. He's "Arnie" I would agree with you though that when speaking to an older person personally that you do not know, unless he has asked you to call him by his first name, you should use the term you used with Jack Nicklaus. Reporters speaking of him should not.

Might seem kinda formal, which could be replaced with phony I suppose.

I didn't hear it said, so in context might change the way I feel, but I'm not sure he would be bent out of shape if he were alive....then again, maybe he would say...hey, call me Arnie.

Really? Everyone on the Golf Channel calls him that; everyone. Its worse than them calling the British Open "The Open"

Not that I have a huge problem with GC, but more than half the time, if I'm watching by myself, I have music playing and the TV volume off so unless it's early morning Euro golf, I don't pay much attention to what is said.

Agree wholeheartedly on the British vs The Open...everyone that knows anything about golf knows the British is the oldest major. I don't have a problem with The Open, but I don't consider it offensive to call it the British Open. There is an Australian Masters and in Australian some people refer to it as the Masters...no big deal.
