Hilarious proof that recruiting stars aren't based off of scouting/evaluation...

HS students create fake recruit, 247 and Rivals rank him as a 3-star : CFB

lol! But this is how recruiting classes are ranked... which effects things like actual rankings of teams, etc, lol."

As a Real UCFan, I talk to our coaches about recruiting. I trust their recruiting evaluations over some Yahoos at Rivals or 247.

Honors, I know you enjoy dining with the coaches, players, recruits. Have you considered some sort of star rating system for their appetite, table manners, etc.?

If I were ranking players, I would totally rank them in large part based on who they have offers for, rather than trying to pretend I and/or those I employed were some great talent evaluators.

I've actually thought about doing this before.

If you get offers from those schools, it should be an indicator of talent. Of course, the first check should be to see if they actually exist.

Rivals rankings have long been seen as the worst.

Is this the same Rivals that recognizes the OP as the #1 fan of UCF?

Go figure.

Are we talking about rankings or posters?

I have. George was way ahead of the game when it came to recruiting. At lunches, I UCFeel like he taught me everything he knew and learned over the years.

One of the biggest lessons is getting to know the player’s parents as well as you get to know the player. That way you learn about characters attributes and ethics of the person that were instilled by the parents.

The problem is, which I learned the hard way, the NCAA doesn’t like boosters contacting player’s parents.

And that illustrates the inherent problem of asymmetric info that external recruiting services don’t have vs what coaches learn.

That’s why I really focus on what the coaches are recruiting for. They know. Yahoos at Rivals and 247 don’t.

It just confirms what we already knew.
At least most of us, anyway.

Several years ago my nephew was told that he would be rated on Rivals if he paid for his player profile page. No pay, no stars.

Do you actually believe coaches recruiting for big time schools rely on these that much? Better players get offers from better schools, so (here comes the real shocker) these recruiting sites will up their stars if offered by one of these better schools

I don't read too much into it. I don't think it's unreasonable to start a recruit off as a 3 star if they have a super strong list of scholarship offers. At some point staff would have looked into this kid and realized he was fake; because they would have tried to evaluate a kid with Alabama offers further.

You would be surprised.

I've been around recruiting from the high school side in several sports (football, baseball, softball) from when I helped friends of mine as a volunteer assistant coach several years ago. There were several out of state programs we encountered that asked why one of our players didn't have a higher star ranking, including a couple of SEC programs.

I don't feel that disproves my point. In fact, it kind of helps it. These coaches were impressed by these kids despite their star rating. If this was a coach from say, Bama or Clemson, and they offered that kid, his rating will almost always go up. The ratings go up based off school offerings a lot of times, not the other way around.

It shows that at the very least there are coaching staffs who pay attention to the recruiting site ratings.

As for kids getting a bump from a Clemson offer.....meh, not so much. Clemson's two major message board sites, Tigernet and The Clemson Insider, are both privately owned so they don't provide the subscriber base for Rivals/Scout/247 to boost rankings for us.
