How is this not tampering? I am so sick of the Lakers poaching players from other teams. I understand Magic says that Ben came to him, but this should never happen.

Lakers great Magic Johnson says Sixers’ Ben Simmons wants ‘big guard’ advice

How is it not tampering?

If they did not talk about contract status or playing with the Lakers then it wasn't.

If you are Ben Simmons, there is a pretty small number of guys you can go to for advice on how to be a better PG. magic is at the top of the list. Current players talk to past greats about developing their games all the time.

While I am sure Magic would love to sign Simmons some day, he won't have the chance for at least 6 years. Nothing to see here.

Don't worry. Magic gonna be fired by the time Simmons is a FA.

You are right for the most part, but, don't be surprised with Simmons telling the 6ers next year or the year after that he wants to be traded to the Lakers. He and Lebron share the same agent, his whorefriend Kartrashian lives in LA. He and Embiid are not the greatest of friends, etc.

He knows he can't.

Porzingas had leverage over the Knicks because he threatened to leave the NBA all together and go back overseas. Simmons doesn't have that card to play. The earliest he can realistically make that threat would be 2023.

Shit, if Simmons contacting Magic for advice on how to play point guard is tampering...

then Pop needs to be fined heavy for tampering for Demps calling him wanting advice on what to do when the Lakers were trying to trade for AD.

The league still shouldn't sign off on it though. Even if everything is strictly about basketball, the optics alone are enough to cause problems. Plus, there's no way to know for sure everything stays on the up and up unless the NBA supervises the workouts (which they wouldn't). Magic works for another team, no other team employees should be working out with other players.

If the 6ers are OK with it, then everybody else should be too.

If I am Philly I agree to bring Magic in and host the workout in our facility. That way everything is onnthe up and up.

Not a big deal, IMO. And it isn't like these guys can't communicate through back channels anyway. Telling Simmons he can't work out with Magic is like telling your teenage daughter who she can't date. You might as well push her into his arms.

I would say there is a 0% chance that the Sixers or the league would be comfortable with Magic "training" Simmons. The optics are terrible especially given Magic's previous public comments and the trouble that Clutch has created pushing to get players to come to L.A.

As a Lakers fan, I'm not OK with it (just like I don't like other team's players training with Kobe). Keep that expertise within the organization. If he wants a tutorial, he knows which team to force a trade to...:trash:

He is pretty good with the tools he has. I am sure the Lakers will want him brfore he is eligible for FA.

shopson is still pissed that the Sixers got Simmons and the Lakers were stuck with Ingram.

So what exactly did Magic and the Lakers do wrong?

Simmons reaches out to the best PG in history and Magic says nothing is going to happen unless both the Sixers and the league agree to it.

Heck, I don’t think he even mentioned Simmons or the Sixers by name.

So where is the tampering taking place?

Here is the thing about this. I audit companies every day for a living and so does my brother. If an audit comes to me in which I have am to audit a friend or company that I conduct business with - I return it to the company ask them to assign it to another auditor. As the vice-president of operation for the Los Angeles Lakers, then Magic Johnson should have said
"I am sorry, but I cannot talk to you concerning anything being that it would give the appearance of player tampering"

Hands off means - NO CONTACT PERIOD. Now if Magic wants to give advice to players - Kobe does that all of the time, but Kobe Bryant does not work for the Lakers and Magic needs to step down so that he can do that - if that floats his boat. Until he does - some one like the wieners in here is going to accuse him of a conflict of interest

So it’s Magics fault an NBA player wants his advice?
That depends on if he has any contact with Simmons or not. Knowing that Simmons wants to talk to him and acting on it are two separate situations. If Simmons contacted Magic Johnson and expressed his wishes or requests - the only correct answer should have been - " I'm sorry, but I can't do that as long as I am working for the Lakers" It's a conflict of interest to say the least
