How did Briere do in his fight? Who did he fight?

He fought turris and looked pretty good doing it. I'd say briere won but it wasn't anything brutal

Stars:

1. Danny Briere. I'd almost put Briere up as a goat, and I was going to do so before he scored in overtime. Yes, he had two goals and a fight win at that point, but he also handcuffed pretty much everyone he passed to, and was his usual useless self in the defensive zone. And let's look at those first two goals. On the first, Voracek beats 3-4 Senators going down the side and dishes to Briere, whose first shot is so bad that Anderson can't control it and Briere gets the rebound and puts it in an empty net. For the second goal, somebody takes a shot from the point. Briere deflects it well wide of the net but the Sens defender redeflects it back in on net. The third goal, on the other hand, was him being in the right place at the right time, and that he does get credit for. Lucky bastard.

2. Bryzgalov - I'm not going to hammer the man for giving up a rebound goal on 2 man PK, and he made a bunch of great saves, and more importantly, stopped the ones he should have. I want consistency from a goalie - he needs to stop the easy ones and stop a good percentage of the hard ones. Today Bryz did both.

3. Waycob Simmocek. Voracek played very well with the exception of fanning on a pass that almost led to a scoring chance against.

Goats:

1. The rookie Dmen. Holy crap, guys, stop giving the puck away. Please.

2. Bad penalties. Don't trip a guy in the corner offensive zone when you are shorthanded. I guarantee you that they are not trying to set up in their own defensive corner, and if they are, you can probably put down that attack pretty darned well.

3. Da Powah Pway. Yes, we scored on the PP, but I covered the way we did it up above. We couldn't get set against the Ottawa PK. It looked like they had 6 guys out there on the kill. Actually, looking at all the too many men calls they had, maybe they did. Either way, the power play had trouble entering the zone, traveling through center ice, and even getting out of our own zone a few times. Gotta do better than that.

Sens part II

stars
couturier - he's amazing.
read - he's good too
anderson - asshole.

goats
turnovers in the d-zone. seriously? holy shit guys.

daily bryz review: thought he played fairly well even in giving up 5 goals. made some big stops, but not as many as anderson and that was the difference on a day when the defenses decided against playing defense

The one reason I am not too frustrated with this game is that Cooter has proven to me he is just going to be a force in future years. If he could just bulk up a bit we have a future stud on our team.

Stars:

1. Bob. THAT'S what we are looking for from a goalie. Stop over thirty pucks, and the only goal allowed is a power play rebound off a rebound shot? Yeah, that's acceptable.
2. Rookies. Both goals and an assist on one of them were from Flyer rookies.
3. Briere. Not really, this slot should be for Bobrovsky again, but hey, I didn't see Briere screw up, and he had two defensive plays in the last minutes of the game. Mmm, delicious, delicious crow.

Goats:

1. Turnovers in the D zone. They started out fine, but they got worse as the game went on. Part of it was Carolina forecheck, part of it was us not handling the puck well, and some of it was...
2. The Carolina ice/puck crew. That puck was harder to handle than the Classic. Don't know whether it was poor ice or poor pucks, but good god.
3. Everyone who wasn't Bobrovsky.

Agree with pretty much everything. Though I thought the top line deserved an accumulated goat tonight. That's 3 games in a row where they've been our least effective line.

And believe it or not the flyers were only charged with 2 turnovers the whole game. Not exactly sure how they got that, but something I'm going to pay closer attention to is the dmen when they get hit. I started watching it closely in the 3rd and I think every single one of them (timo included) gave up the puck 2+ times because they were afraid to be hit. They need to adjust to this and either move the puck quicker or take the hit to make the play

Honorable mention to Jacob he was everywhere offensively and defensively, Simmonds for his excellent hard backchecking from start to finish, and Harry Z for an excellent all around game.

though you wont admit it the jvr schenn simmonds line was the best/most effective line last night. they work well together.

Yes they were the most effective but only because of schenn and simmonds if you could name one play that JVR stood out on i will admit it.

Isles

Stars
1. Bob - simply put, he deserved a shutout
4. Couturier - i'm thinkin about ordering the jersey.

Goats
1. Everyone else wearing black and orange. I think that was the first game all season where the flyers were outworked, and they were outworked badly

2. The refs - that was awful. pretty much 100% in the flyers favor so i'm not livid, but that was bad officiating.. multiple interferences, high stickings, and hookings that were not called on the flyers.. that was a very poorly officiated game

Notes
1. To the flyers d-men: grabner is not slow
2. To the flyers: please move on the PP a little. holy stagnation batman.
3. To bryz defenders on here: bobrovsky proved it is in fact possible to stop deflections. i dont have the number, but i wouldn't be surprised if there were 5+ redirections that bob stopped tonight.

Stars:

1. Bob.
2. Fucking.
3. Rovsky.
4. Hartnell - had a strong game in the offensive zone, didn't take stupid penalties, and did some work in the d zone as well. Please note that when Hartnell is the one doing work in your d zone SOMETHING HAS GONE HORRIBLY WRONG.
5. Couturier - Nice shot.

Goats:

1. The refs. Did we have a manager distracting the ref, because it looked like the Isles got jobbed old-school WWF style. I LOATHE when high sticking calls aren't made, and they missed a whole bunch of them tonight.
2. The Flyers. We got outworked, and short of Bobrovsky playing Tilt-A-Whirl with the deflections and breakaways we would have gotten blown away. There are games you deserve to win but don't. Here we didn't deserve to win but did.
3. The Flyers' skates. We fell down a whole bunch tonight, was something up with the ice? I thought the Winter Classic was a one time thing; it seems like every game we play the ice is terrible. Maybe our equipment manager has decided to sharpen our skates with a jigsaw, I dunno.
3b. Briere, don't hook their dmen in their dzone when it's a 2 on 2 the other way. You should consider skating towards the play, or growing a brainstem. It's like every stupid penalty Hartnell ever took has percolated into you.

Bryz - put your mother fucking stick on the mother fucking ice to defend your mother fucking 5-hole. Jesus fucking Christ how are a pro goalie when you don't follow one of two fundamental goalie practices. Keep your glove high and cover your god damned 5-hole with your stick. God damnit I hate losing on goals like that shit.

The other two weren't your fault, but a 5 million dollar goalie makes those saves.

Bryz-fuck you

Couturier-I love you.

I think our season is fucked for the reason of shit goaltending and our defense. Especially when we cannot score more than two goals. Giroux is in a huge slump. Not good right now.

Stars:

1a. Couturier.
1b. Simmonds. This order is alphabetical, not racist.
3. Mezaros (offensive zone only) He did a great job pinching in, setting up/getting shots on net. We shall not talk about the other zone.

Goats:
1. Top line. Guys, at some point you are gonna have to score. This probably isn't the best game to rag on them because Sutter+Weber+Rinne = Yipe, but it's pretty clear that our top line can't defeat a team focusing on shutting them down. Fortunately we have solid secondary scoring, but secondary scoring isn't called that because you rely on it to win games...
2. Gettin' forechecked. We have been having a lot of issues in our own zone recently. I don't know if it's because guys aren't making themselves available or because we keep trying cute passes instead of simple ones or if we just suck at moving the puck out (probably a combination of the three), but it's hard to score when it's in your zone.
3. Whatever asshole(s) decided to distribute/sell those stupid whistles. They were annoying as hell; I didn't read the GNT so I don't know if you guys noticed, but they were bugging me the whole game.

Bonus goat: The camera crew had a really hard time following the play today.
