What a fantastic career. Damn good hitter (.286/.339/.480, 116 OPS+ over 12130 PA) and one of the greatest defensive 3rd basemen of all-time, if not one of the greatest defensive players period. And not many players can say they were productive for two decades. He only had one year with the Sox, but he was an absolute joy to watch in that year (.321/.365/.553 with the usual Gold Glove caliber defense) and I really wished the Sox could have held onto him. Dude continued to play at an All-Star level for another 5-6 years.

Probably a top five 3rd baseman of all-time. Easy HOFer.

Top 5?

Nah...but definitely somewhere in the top 10 ( between 7-10) imho.

Definitely 1st ballot HOF though. No doubt.

Props to him.

He had a heckuva run as a player...and he'll make an excellent coach or mgr someday.

Letting him go for Carl Crawford changed the course of Red Sox history.

I think Schmidt's unquestionably #1 and then #2-6 are interchangeable, though I suppose it depends on how you weigh batting/defense. Chipper was a way better hitter than Beltre, but Beltre was also a way better defender.

Definitely a Hall of Famer, probably a 1st or 2nd ballot easily.

Beltre wasn't too far from 500 HRs, but it probably would have been two seasons for him to get there even if he didn't regress too badly.
I kind of wrote him off after the Seattle debacle, but he had plenty of life left in him after all. He never came close to that last golden year in LA again...

if he's "definitely a Hall of Famer", then why wait a ballot? the "1st ballot" concept is dumb. if you think someone's worthy of being enshrined, just vote for them.

It was my hope the Red Sox would've traded for him at the waiver deadline. Dude deserves to have won a ring.

I agree!

Any baseball writer who has that mentality of "he's a Hall of Famer but not a first ballot Hall of Famer" is a self-important jackass whom should be removed from the list of voters.

One of the best I've ever seen on both sides of the ball. The guy is a shoo-in for the HOF. Durable as all hell, up until the last couple years too.

Loved watching him play. One of my all time favorites.
