Lowe: Should Celtics put Jaylen Brown in a Kawhi trade?

Zack Lowe makes some good points about the Celtics trading Brown for Leonard.

When it is all said and done, I think both the Sixers and Celtics have to decide whether they think that Kawhi can get them a championship next year. If they believe he can, then it makes sense to go all-in. But if they think that the Warriors will still be too good, it is probably not worth the risk.

If I'm Philly and I don't think I can win next year, I still do it. They have the benefit of having Simmons and Embiid locked up for a long time. So even if Kawhi leaves, they will still be attractive to tons of future free agents. And what they have to give up (Fultz, Covington, possibly Saric) is ultimately replaceable. It's worth the risk for them no matter what because who knows, maybe Kawhi would love it there.

Though if I were them, I'd at least try to pitch Lebron or PG first. Signing one of those while keeping all your assets is the best move. Kawhi is just one hell of a Plan B

from cincy to kentucky?? and now spurs..... ok @droider
I've never supported Cincinnati. You're thinking of a user who had a similar name to me and changed his name to BearcatKlaw. Not sure what his name is now. I live in Kentucky though and have been watching the Spurs for 10 years.

Why is this relevant?

And the plot thickens.

The Plot twist is Pops ain't helping out the Lakers by sending Leonard there. Pops is close to retirement, he is not going out on rebuilding a team with a bunch of young players and not competing.

And yet reports are that he will deal with the Lakers if they have the best offer.

Do the Spurs want to deal with the Lakers? Of course not. They don't want to deal with any team in the West, especially the Lakers.

But they are too smart to not do what is in the best interest of their franchise. If they look at all the offers and feel like the Lakers have the best offer, they'll hold their nose and take it.

The ultimate question is whether or not Kawhi only wants to go to the Lakers or they are just his preferred destination.

If it's the former...there's a good chance the Lakers will have the best offer. Teams like the Sixers and Celtics probably don't want to give up much of what they've built for a 1 year rental. Although, I could see a mid/lower level playoff team deciding it's worth risking a rental and making a better offer.

But if it's the latter, they're not getting him because other teams can put together better offers.

I think trading for Kawhi is a hell of a recruiting pitch to land LeBron as well.

Just sayin...

The Spurs have a huge problem. Kahwi says he will play for LA either this year or next. His trade value has now been lowered to the level below snake shit. The Spurs have zero leverage in a trade. Word is that Ainge is willing to offer one or two players, but not of the top 8. More like a Theis and Larkin and maybe a second round pick.

Nobody is going to deal any kind of a package for a guy who only wants to play in one place and is going to be a free agent in 2019........................<NOBODY>
That's easy to say but will the lakers have the cap room to straight sign him in free agency next yr?

Again, Pops wants to continue to compete. I just can't buy into the theory he wants to rebuild at this point in his coaching career.

Regardless of what he wants, what are his options? He's not going to find a top 5 player to sub in for Kawhi unless he convinces Lebron to come after dumping Kawhi's contract elsewhere without bringing back salary. Spurs would have to trim a bit more salary to get Lebron his max deal, but it could be done if the Spurs just take draft picks for Kawhi (or inexpensive prospects and dump a bit more salary).

If they trade Kawhi, it's likely going to be a rebuild no matter what Pop wants.

No matter what team they trade him to, it's likely going to be for young players and picks.

The NBA has always allowed the Hollywood Hollagans to do whatever they want. They love seeing Jack Nicholson sitting next to the team on TV.

Fultz is getting traded this year, and if I am Philly I might want to get it done sooner

Yeah, not established vets.

Aldridge may get dealt if they blow it up and decide to go young.

Ultimately it may not be his decision and if they trade Leonard and Aldridge, he just may opt to retire.
